Last week, I had a new injection pump and a retrofitted in-tank lift pump installed by a DC dealer for the tidy sum of $3300.00. My truck has 128,000 miles on her, and is nearly 5 years old.

I was PM'd recently by a forum member advising me to look carefully at my warranty booklet, and provided a link to a TDR thread where someone with a similar scenario challanged DC on the "out of warranty" repair, and actually won receiving a refund check from DC for the injection pump and labor charges.

Here's the situation:

If you have a 2000, 2001, or a 2002 like me, your warranty manual clearly states that the Cummins Diesel Engine has a separate warranty that begins at the end of the basic 3/36 warranty. The next paragraph states that the warranty is 5 years or 100,000 miles. Among the parts covered is the injection pump (Interestingly, the lift pump is not among the covered parts).

To me, as well as a few other who were in my situation, this indicates that the engine and the listed engine components are covered for 8 years or 136,000 miles, and I was wrongly charged for the repair.

I'm wondering how you guys interpret the warranty? In my 2002 manual, it's section 2.6

They replaced my lift pump under the engine warranty a week before they replaced my injection pump under the same warranty. It was at 50K and I didn't have to pay a single dime for either of them. Now that is service. I don't know about the engine warranty STARTING at the end of the other. I'd get a lawyers opinion if you can get one for free.

3/36 from dodge.
5/100k from cummins.

the 2 are not added together.
good luck though if you can get it to work in your favor.

imagine. to get the 3/36, then buy a 7/70 extended, and then the 5/100k.

whats that? 15 years and 206,000 miles under warranty? great but unreasonable.

I think most of us are past the warranty stage...they'd open our hoods and start laughing...warranty this mess??? .... ya right!

I read that statement as meaning that DC is on the hook for 3/36 then Cummins after DC until 5/100

I have yet to see Cummins warranty any of their engines installed in Dodge Rams. What model year(s) are you referring to regarding the Cummins warranty?

That is correct—they're not added together—it's not an 8 year/136,000 mile warranty. Commatoze is inquiring about a model year 2002 Cummins/Ram. The Warranty Information booklet model year 2002 has the same warranty text as the three previous years. Elementary reading of the simple English text in these booklets shows that the Basic Warranty and the Cummins Diesel Engine Limited Warranty run consecutively, not concurrently. After carefully reading the post, including the linked booklet pages and Code of Federal Regulations pages, I would be surprised if you continued to believe that the warranties mentioned run concurrently.

My dealer agreed with me. DaimlerChrysler seems to agree with me.
