My rig moans in the cold

I guess I do too but this is almost funny.
I plug it in with a timer so in the morning it starts just fine. But when the temp is below 20 it has an almost sad moan. I'm pretty sure it's coming from the PS pump or the serpentine belt. Everything else runs fine It just isn't happy about running in the cold for the first 15 or 20 minutes.

Anyone else get this? Am I right about the PS pump?

VADSL, this is a common occurrence if you don't use synthetic fluid in the hydroboost (PS and brakes). You will often feel a slight vibration in the steering wheel if you turn the wheel when it is really cold and the fluid hasn't warmed up yet.

Lots of us do....... and yea, it is the PS pump.

Matter of fact,, mine is pulled into the shop today, time for a flush and fluid replace. Seems like every 3-5 years I have to do it, turkey baster and replace, run it to circulate fluid, repeat until fluid looks really good.

Easy way to just flush it.
Pull the return hose from the hydroboost and extend into a bucket. Start the truck then start pouring fluid into the reservoir. It'll pump through the system and push out the junk. Shut it off, re-install the hose and fill.

The turkey baster works. I instead used a hand pumped evac thingy..
it came with 3 diff sizes of tube with a hand plunger. once it got a prime it sucked out quickly and I was able to pull out alot more than a baster would due to the tube size.. i was using a tube that was about the size of a pencil.
I got it at a tool place in oregon. sorta like harbor freight but this is a just in Oregon.

Mine has probably never been done and looks a little brown. What would be a good choice for fluid? Long gone are the days of just using ATF.

I use amsoil atf in all my vehicles for power steering. No issues at any temps.

Amsoil actually sells a 100% full synthetic power steering fluid that works great, it comes in 16floz containers that is just the amount you can suck out of the reservoir on a 2nd gen using a vacuum pump extractor.

any chance of a pic of the exact hose you are talking about , I use the baster method it gets annoying after a while doing it not to mention a major waste of fluid.

I found a cheap clear plastic hand pump which came equipped with a few feet of hose on both ends. I think it cost like $5 and it worked great by allowing me to stick the suction hose end all the way to the bottom of the reservoir, pulling out a full pint.

Well I switched out the fluid which was dark but not too bad and the moaning continues, getting a little worse with time. I'm guessing a new pump is in my future.
I see Geno's has a good deal on one but I can't find any info on what is involved with changing out the pump.
Anyone done this? What should I be looking for and expecting?

Did you just change it once?

I usually have to do it 2 or 3 times, running it in between to circulate the fluid.

Also, did you jack the front end up when you were getting the air out?

Another possibility is a cracked line or a rusted line that is letting air in, but you usually have a small leak as well.

Pump is relatively easy, sometimes getting the lines off can be a pain, but other than that, very straightforward.
