Usually what causes them to fail is the even more failure prone "lift" pump that supplies the injection pump (aka VP44). It dies and starves the VP and next thing you know you are stuck in Virgina somewhere.

SWEEEEEEEET!!!!!! Yeah I will be a bitter old <edit> telling all the newbies how it was in the old days with the 610 CTD....LMMFAO

Don't fall for it Lary ... that ain't his finger he's a holdin up.

Ed ... welcome to the club. I hope you at least have a warm place to work on it.
That's a pretty good wife to bring you a thermos of . (She understand how much these pumps cost ?? )

Hope the next one lasts at least that long.

I've recently repaired 2 VP44s that made the truck just stop without any codes etc. (98 and 99)- both had wire taps. I thought let's see about that wire tap, and just cut the original wire as far away from the tap and replaced it with a new piece of wire , soldered and shrink tubed. (Kind of a job for a gynaekologist- sp?)- Tried to start an voila- truck running
To me it seemed like the wire had corroded a good bit until the resistance was too high and the fuel solenoid didn't get enough juice any more.
Maybe it's worth a try before you buy the pump.
(on a lot of other trucks that trick did not work though)
Just my 2c

Was this corrosion caused by the wire getting tapped? Was it a poor job to begin with?

VERY interesting! Do you have any pics?

Ed you have to use the ****** off aproach with the wife,it goes like this, this #$%^ truck is pissing me off and to top it off a new injection pump is 1600.00. The key is you act really mad and they aren't the wiser that you are getting the HOT ROD VP. I have used this technique several times to get what i need for the truck without the warden catching on. On the other hand maybe you are lucky and your wife likes the loud pedal too.

Wifey doesn't give me grief for spending money on the truck (usually), or the bikes.
What bites is I just finished with Christmas shopping, dropping $3,000 to waterproof the basement of the rental house, ~$2,000 on the Geezer-Glide, and buying Wifey's plane ticket so she can go home to see her Mom in Peru in Feb.
I realize it's not a case of IF the pump will die, but WHEN the pump will die.
But it would have been much nicer if it had held off for another month or so.
Thank goodness I paid the balance off on the Visa in November, so....

Ta-ta-ta-taaa-ta-taaaaaaaaa!!

CHARGE it!

Whereabouts?

Would be a good thing to stick in memory, just in case mine goes out of warranty, or after certain modifications null and void any warranty.
