Miss?? backfire???

My frind just got an 01 cummins, 5 spd with 76000 miles, and a edge EZ, and i was driving it today and i stepped on the Go pedal, in 5th doing about 1200 rpms, and nothing happend, it started to pick up VERY slowly, then i down shifted, and mashed the pedal and it made a pretty loud POP and it puffed a cloud of blueish grey smoke, then it ran fine after that. i came back to work and stopped and checked the codes (ignition thing on the odometer) and 1693 came up but no others, any suggestions or comments. TIA

If the 1693 is there, that means there are others.

The ignition thing doesn't retrieve all the codes, apparantly.

You'll have to throw it on a scanner to get the rest of them.

Autozone will scan for free, as well as most other big auto part chains.

Loud pop could have been an intake boot popping off, but it shouldn't run right after that.

it was like a backfire you get out of a gasser. Out the exhaust, with a cloud of blueish smoke?? i dont know i told him to go take it to auto zone and see what other codes they could bring up, cause thats what i figured, if 1693 is there, there has to be others. Guess we'll see on monday, or whenever he goes in. Oh and it hasnt done it since that once. I dont know???
