Massive oil leak
2001 CTD, 4X4, A/T
I have a massive oil leak in the aluminum case that holds the gear drive behind the stamped timing cover.
Right behind the water pump is is gushing oil.
After i did the CCV hose out the back of the truck, one of the guys that works for me decided to kink the hose and crankcase pressure blew out the gasket.
Is there anywhere online that has the repair manual online that I can look at or do I need to go buy the book?
I have the radiator out and the fan off and I can see that the balance, water pump, and timing cover have to come off.
What kind of surprise am I in for when I get inside the timing cover?
Do I have to remove the oil pan?
Anything else I should do besides new belt and hoses while I'm in there?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

You may be the victim of a KDP = killer dowel pin , lots of info here , do a search on KDP .
Its a pin that aligns the block & timing cover [ alum ] , it has a history of falling out , there are fix's for keeping it from doing that [ which you want to do after fixing ] .
But if your lucky , I've seen the bolts loosen timing housing & blow out a gasket .
You need to power wash to confirm , gasket / case .

KDP is an issue even on the '02s.
Look for a crack or hole under the water pump in the aluminum case.
My dad's '02 had an old style case and did have a failure.
CHECK ALL TRUCKS THROUGH '02!!!

i dont think u have a crack, your friend kinking the line built up too much back pressure in the motor and it blew the gasket to escape......http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...30&catalogid=1

It was definitely a kinked breather line.
If I hold my finger over it oil gushes out of the timing case next to the water pump and when i let it go nothing comes out.
I was just wondering how tough it was to take all the stuff off insidee the timing case to change the gasket.
I guess i will have to go but a manual.

Anyone know the best buy on a manual or disk?
Do I have to pull the cam when I get in there or does the cam gear unbolt from the front of the cam?
Is that the worst part about this project?

Yes, you have to pull the cam, and I think it's the worst part. The valvetrain will have to be removed, and you will have to fabricate a dozen wooden dowels to hold the lifters up away from the cam. You'll have to remove all the coolers in front of the engine, as well as the front bumper. It's a long job, but you'll know your truck a lot better by the time it's over.

The 2001 has a press on gear.
I have seen it removed with carefull heat, but I would also recommend pulling it.
The gear should be pressed off and back on. Although I have heated gears in the oven and dropped them onto the cam with no major issues.
This may be a good time to add a cam.
