loses power under load

have a '98 24 valve and going over an overpass [after driving on hi-way for about 20 to 30 miles ] this truck falls on it's face. you can matt the throttle and nothing.
let off and coast for a little bit, get back on the gas and it takes off like nothing happened. the farther you drive it the worse it gets.
had a new apps put in it at the local cummins shop a while back, took it back to them and they said it wasn't the apps.
another shop told me the turbo was bad. i can't buy that answer.
i've tried the ign. switch trick, to pull code #'s and get nothing.
it's getting frustrating. it only does this pulling my camper or something heavy.

What are your FP #'s. Sounds familiar to a VP failure, hot fuel VP electronics failing, no codes not common but not unheard of.

Let us know.

Good luck.

The key trick does not work on the 981/2 and 99's. You will need to use a code reader. Auto Zone stores will usually read them for you at no charge.

Go to the "Tech Facts" link above and get the instructions for the APPS reset and re-cal. They are free and you have nothing to loose.

If you don't have gages, and you plan on keeping the truck, you need to get at least a fuel pressure gage.

Better get ready to cough up about a grand. I just replaced my IP yesterday. I have been driving the truck since April with it doing exactly as you described. I would just keep letting off the accelerator and then press it back down. I tried my best to find something other than the IP but, after replacing it mine now runs fine...............[coffee]

broke down and took truck to local dodge dealer. they ran scan test and what ever else they do then told me the IP was bad and needed replaced. also said that i should install the "conversion kit for the lp" to insure that the IP doesn't go out again. total price, parts and labor, just short of $4000.
called a local independent diesel shop and told them what dodge said and, they told me that dodge was blowing smoke about the lift pump kit. said it WAS NOT a guarantee on saving the IP.
they said "if you run it out of fuel or starved it 'cause of dirty filters" take it to the shop and buy another IP.
they replaced my IP and checked codes and lift pump for $1650.
this weekend, i'm going to hang my 30ft. 5th whl. on the back and take a road trip and try it out.
love the truck, love the cummins. the IP is a P.O.S. the weakest link on a 24 valve.
grew up working on cummins truck engines and love'm but this 24 valve has me worried.

Not a bad price. I had one replaced a few weeks ago, 1200 miles form home, for $1618 at a Cummins repair shop. Local DD wanted something like $1000 more. I won't hesitate to get in it and go anywhere.
