Gents,<br><br>I posted this in 24 Valve tech and I'm gettin no replies, so I'll try it here...<br><br>I need to replace my leaking rear pinion seal and I was hoping that someone knew what size socket I'd need to get the nut off the pinion... I don't want to have to tear the truck half apart to put it back together just to go and buy the socket...<br><br>Dana 80 in a '99 5spd. <br><br>Any help would be appreciated, my calipers won't reach around the yoke/u joint to get a measurement... I believe the nut on the pinion takes a 1 5/16&quot; socket. <br>If you do buy or borrow one, make sure it's a 6 point.

We did my 97 3500 D80 pinion seal a couple months ago. I think the size was bigger than 1 5/16...more like 2&quot;. In addition...a regular socket had to be ground down on the outside quite a bit before it would fit into the recess. If BigK sees this post, maybe he will check his toolbox for the socket he modified and give you better details.

Lowdown on the 80.

Nut size on John Fellman's truck was 1 7/8&quot;. Had to modify socket to &quot;thin wall&quot;. Not that thin, but thinner than it was.

I would assume that an 80 in a 2500 STD would have same components as an 80 in a 3500 auto. John's was a 3500.

Be advised that torque spec on the nut is &quot;RFT&quot;! A bit of blue loctite would not hurt.

How many miles, and under what conditions? Check your yoke for damage/wear. If yoke is damaged, seal will not last long. Some grooves are OEM.

6pt, 12pt, tight fit is important. Selection of sockets in that size are limited. Craftsman was too big o.d. to fit w/o mods. I had three sockets here, and none would fit w/o modification. Got one that does now. ;D

I stand corrected. I was looking at the 267RBI -- what is that a Dana 70?<br><br>Then I would assume the 286RBI is the Dana 80? My '02 manual has a few different numbers, but close enough to what you posted! ;D<br><br>Tony

My Haynes book said the torque spec was 440 to 500 ft. lbs... I guess just turn the impact up and hit it a few times <br><br>Truck is, as of this evening, 3 miles short of 182K. I did check the fuild level a few days ago and it did have some copper-ish looking flakes in it.. no idea when the last time the fluid was changed, if ever. <br><br>An old man had the truck before me and he just rode around checking wells. I asked him if he ever pulled anything with the truck, he thought about it for a second and said, &quot;yeah... once, I pulled a lawnmower trailer once...&quot; Had handicap plates on it too...

I was even debating about going ahead and start grinding down the o.d. on the socket this afternoon, glad I decided to wait, woulda been kinda hard to return it :<br><br>Seriously, thanks for the correction ;D

Serious apology for the incorrect info. Glad I caught it in time. And you too.<br>You are going to have to do some serious cutting on that Craftsman socket.<br>Do you have, or know anyone with a lathe close at hand?<br>I could get you an OD measurement that would save you a LOT of grinding time. Much faster on the lathe, and well worth $ spent.<br><br>Eric

Craftsman 1 7/8 socket OD = 2.57&quot; +/-

OD required for yoke pocket. I turned my socket to 2.45&quot; OD. Snug fit. Did not want to cut more than necessary. It does not sound like a lot, but it's about 1/16&quot; dia. That is a LOT to grind by hand. Find a lathe if you can. Easy job.

Ok well ther new seal is in, eric your socket worked great BUT one slight problem.... my torque wrench only goes up to 250 ftlbs. Anyone know of anywhere in San Antonio that loans out 440-500 ft lb torque wrenches??? It's torqued to 250 right now and I kinda need to drive it but I don't want to screw it up... Ideas?? 3 foot cheater pipe on a 3/4&quot; rachet times how muny grunts, groans, and cusses equals 440 to 500 ft lbs?

edit: my brother-in-law's 1/2&quot; impact has walked off on him so thats not an option :'(
