Looking to buy my first CTD

Hey guys, im new to the site but i want to trade my 1997 gas 5.9 1500 (70,550 miles on it) in on a newer CTD. The configuration im looking at is the extended cab short bed 4x4, in either the 2001 or 2002 model with around 30-50k miles. Im looking to spend in the neighborhood of$18,000-23,000, is there anything i should look for specifically when looking for this truck? Will it be hard to find a truck like this at this price? Should i consider a CTD with more than 50K without worry that it has been "used and abused?" Thanks guys, i know its alot of questions but im 100% new to the diesel scene, so i welcome all advice!! OH and naturally i plan to bomb the Heck out of it!!

I would worry about any truck havig les than 100k unless your wanting factory warranty. If it looks like it been taken care of inside and out then its probably a great truck as most are. do take it to autozone or someplace that can put a scanner on it for free when you test drive and see if it has any code stored in computer, or a trusted mechanic that hes some diesel knowlage.

The rear disc brakes showed up on what we call the 2001.5's. On the 2002 's they removed the CAD (front axle disconnect), so many of us think the 2001.5 is best of bred of the 24Ver!!!! I would have someone check the lift pump pressure, to make sure the truck has not been driving around with a failed lift pump, which is very hard on the injector pump.

I made the same move you did almost three years ago.....5.9L gas to the CTD.

As Snoking mentioned, get that lift pump pressure checked so you don't have a premature vp44 failure. Nevertheless, this would be covered under the 100,000 mile part of the warranty.

If you buy from a dealer and the truck is out of it's original 3/36 warranty they will usually offer some sort of dealer warranty. Something like a one-month/3,000 mile warranty. Take full advantage of it and have the steering, ball joints, track bar, axle seals, and etc. checked by a trusted third party mechanic. I didn't do this in time and I ended up footing the bill for new frontend parts.

Enjoy your new ride. These CTD's will run circles around the 5.9L gas with a few aftermarket goodies.
