Bought my 2002 in Jan 05 with 38K miles on. Installed a FP gauge to and found out I had a close to dying LP. I replaced the LP and 40000 and it took almost 2 yrs for the VP to die. It finally went at 85K. I had it warranited with the intank pump and now I have 113K on my truck and it runs great. I would buy another 24v truck again.

Well my 01 has 212k on the ticker. It is on its third vp. The first one at 70k, the second at 154k and the current one is still going strong. Replaced a lift pump at 54k and the current one works but is weak. However I am running a rasp pump that I put on at 142k so it is not a real concern. The front end got new ball joints at 186k and since the axle was mostly torn apart I went ahead and replaced the outer axle joints and the axle seals. I just replaced the ujoints in the drivelines at 205k. Rebuilt the transfer case at 190k. It was really just leaking from the front seal but figured with that many miles if it was out might as well do it all. Just a few weeks ago I finally replaced the stock batteries that were still working ok but were starting to weep a bit. Have no real complaints about the truck (except the vp's) it has treated me well and fully expect it go for quite a while longer.

276,000 miles and still going strong on the original VP-44. I have been through 3LPs and installed a FP gage after the first one crapped out. Since then, LP#3 is an Aeromotive AE11203 mounted at the frame rail by the tank with Geno's relocation kit and 30K miles still no drop in pressure.

Now for the killer and naysayers

104,000 on straight waste veggie oil!

Only thing that stopped this truck as it is in the body shop after T-boning a concrete bollard. New bed and claening up all the rust, so it has been down 2 weeks......boy rental cars suck.

My next project is converting it to Hydrogen injection for more mileage.

160k on the original vp ...

lift pump number three just went in ... relocated to the rear

been at 500hp since 90k ...

i've always wondered whether folks who have to put 10 lift pumps in in 50k miles have some other problem that hasn't been addressed ... electrical, poor fuel, banjo bolt plugged ... etc

oh ... and no fuel additives at all ... if i had been running them i would have spent enough by now to purchase a new motor

Some bad...... mostly good strong love affairs! Better results than most vehicles on the planet.
24v, 2nd Gen may not win Cummins "Engine of the Century" award, but still a good reliable truck 99.9% of the time! And that ain't so terrible!

At 58k miles, my truck is on its' 5th LP. Number 4 lasted longer than the previous 3, I think, because of moving the LP to the frame rail and opening up the fuel lines. I have used a fuel conditioner/additive since day one. Also never ran fuel tank below 7 gallons. Didn't seem to matter much regarding LP longevity. I'm thankful that I bought LP #4 from NAPA because I got a one year warranty. The pump lasted 11 months. The previous 3 pumps were bought from Cummins Southern Plains and had only 6 month warranties. As far as I know, the VP44 is working fine - no codes. I think the truck is great -wouldn't trade it for anything especially since its' been paid off for over a year. I probably need to drive it 3 more years just to break-even.

My grandfather has an 01' 2500 4x4 Auto with 40k. It's towed a travel trailer while it's bed was loaded from day one. No lp's or vp's replaced but it has had 8+ A/C evaporators in it and has been to the dealership more times for the A/C than I can count on my hands twice over. But if it's still one of the most reliable vehicles ever.

2broke2smoke:

On my 2002 Dodge CTD 24 valve, I didn't quite get to ten (10) lift pumps but I was almost halfway there! What I wanted to tell you was my Son and I did all the "upgrades" to our fuel systems including:

- bigger banjo bolts
- larger fuel lines (-6)
- auxiliary fuel pump mounted on frame away from heat
- proper electrical connections including HD switches and relays

Even WITH doing all that, I STILL had alot of failures. I think it sometimes gets down to how much luck you have with the replacement LP's.

167K so far with original IP and 4 or 5 LP so far. Complete new front end from golden rod to ball joints...really didn't need all the parts, I was just chasing a popping noise and refused professional help. New PS pump at 150K, new HTS tranny at 166K and a bunch of other stuff that didn't need replacing but I thought it did; chasing noises again. Maybe one day I'll learn to leave the truck alone and maybe it won't need so many parts. Anyway, this truck is going to be my son's first truck so I'll have to keep for another 6 years and then he can have what's left.

I run the 24v 5.9 in a 2002 Ottawa spotter. Its not a Dodge but it is the same engine and runs the VP44. So far it has 17,400 hrs on the original VP. This puppy is running 12 hrs a day 5 days a week. At 50 mph avg that is over 850000 miles, and trust me I tie onto some heavy stuff. The 24v has got the right stuff. This unit is stating to use some oil though, about a quart a week!

165,000 on mine. Other than lift pump issues. (Once I Finally got a Walbro fuel Pump all the issues were solved.)
I had no problems until last week. Then id started with shifting problems. First. I would rev higher in each gear before shifting. Then wouldn't shift into third at all.
Finally limped into the tranny shop with it not doing anything but first.
Turns out it was just plain worn out. No clutch material left and the bands were gone also.
They were surprised I made it as far as I did.
Hopefully I'll be good for another 165K with the new trans.

That's impressive!
Original injectors? Valve guides? etc.
Ever had the head off? Other work?

wow looks like a common these is multiple lift pumps (LP's)...Is this because you're getting stock replcament LP and putting them in the stock area for the LP?

I got a FASS 150/95-1008 unit with the 95gph pump and it's mounted on the frame rail in front of the rear left tire well. I am hoping this will be the 2nd (and last) LP I will have to have, I replaced the stock LP at like 29K miles and put in gauges when the FASS went in, so far been reading a steady 13.5psi idle and 12 at WOT tapped from the banjo bolt going into the VP, with the FASS going straight to the VP (factory LP removed).
