Lo ngest running VP44???
Hey,
What's the most mileage anyone has gotten out of a VP44.
I'm guessing the average is 100K, but I'd sure like to know what everyone else thinks.
My first one died around 70K, and I've ran lucas in it since, so I'm thinking the second one should go a lot longer.
one more thought. About 2 or 3 years ago, Bosch had a meeting in San Francisco (I think???if my memory aint shot). Someone posted the meeting on the web and they had said forthright in writing that when the vp44 was designed they did NOT take into account that someone (like califiornia??and then the rest of the us) was going to take the sulphur out of diesel.
They had also posted metallurgy pictures of the walls of a VP44 enlarged something like 20,000X. Like they always do in mettalurgy to see what's really going on with the metal surface.
They had posted two pictures of the wall of a VP44. ONE with a zillion hours on it with low sulphur diesel, and one with a zillion hours on it with the same thing only with Stanadyne added. When I saw the difference between those two pictures I **** hear had a heart attack. WOW?
Now, later on, that information has mysteriously disappeared from the web. I can't find it anywhere. When my friend told me he was not going to put addative in his '01...his reason was that dodge told him that what I told him was a pile of crap, and I went to print out the meeting minutes, (or whatever that was that was on the web... maybe TDR had it or something) I could not find it anywhere.
Now my friend's VP44 is dying, He has to crank it about 30 to 60 seconds to start it unless he just shut it off. And it's getting worse. I told him there was a few small things it could be, but 150K with no addative and california diesel was not going to help his pump much. He has one of those ones with the 6 spd. pretty cool truck...and doesn't want to find out it "may" be a big repair bill. I've offered to read his codes for him with my reader but so far he hasn't found time to drop by.
Anyway, enough said.
One more thing. I have NEVER been able to find stanadyne here in the l.a. area. The cummins shop I go to sells Lucas, so I use it. The man at the dodge dealership told my friend also that he personally had a VP44 of his own that went bad and he was using Stanadyne in it the whole time. I'm guessing that's a pile of crap due to the fact that he still hasn't came up with a place for me to go buy stanadyne (he had to get it somewhere???). So I can only assume he was lying trying to get my friend past the 100K mark,,....which he succedded in doing quite nicely.

My Vp (RIP) died @ 55k. You can get Stanadyne @ a Vw dealership, ask for the diesel fuel treatment, and I've seen it at GM dealerships, and OTR truck repair shops on there parts shelves.

Mine died at 68K.
Geico has his original at something like 170K??
I don't think there is a fair way to approach which additive does what and when.
I use PS now, but never used any on the original pump.

Both mine were electronic failures so the lubes I used did nothing. 60k and then the next one (brand new 027 pump) went 8k so I dont think it matters. You get luck on some of them.

I just bought mine last month. The original owner put 195,000 with the original lift pump and VP44. The only thing he ever did to it is replace the head at 110,000 for what he described as dropping a valve. Runs perfect for me, but I will install a fuel preasure guage and warning light as soon as I get back home. I will also be buying a lift pump relocate kit, a spare pump, and be prepareing for the inevitable VP44 failure.
