My fathers 02 CTD seems to be having some fuel delivery problems. While driving along the power seems to "Sputter" on and off. Just today while accelerating the truck hesitated and almost shut off but then gave a cloud of grayish smoke and the power came back. Could this be the lifter pump or could this be something as simple as a clogged fuel filter?

 

Could be either.

Check the cheap stuff first, the fuel filter.
Then you can move on to the lift pump ($150).
Hopefully you caugt it before it took out the injection pump ($1300)

2002 should still be under warranty, lift pump and injection pump are covered till 100,000 miles, and either 5 years or 7 years depending on when he got the 2002.

We'll check out the fuel pump tommorow and see what we got. The truck only has 75K so I hope that the lifter pump isnt gone yet, but who knows.

 

My lift pump went out at about 10K on mine.

 

75 k is a long life for the original LP!! Most don't last that long.......get the LP pressure checked out immediately!
