Lift pump recall by NHTSA

Re:Lift pump recall by NHTSA
I still maintain that it is not a safety issue as the truck does not stop on failure unless there is an air leak, but if a group were serious the proper forum would be a class action suit. This was done when GM produced a bad diesel engine years ago.

It generally takes a lot of people dieing to get them interested. It would be hard to prove death due to a poor lift pump design. Take into consideration that Chevy uses three pumps on the chassis cabs with dual tanks and they go bad constantly.

"I still maintain that it is not a safety issue as the truck does not stop on failure unless there is an air leak"

Well, there's been a fair number of folks who've had their VP-44's suddenly just up and die - presumably from previous failure of the LP, since those either died previously or were found to aslo be bad when the VP-44 died, and a fair number of LP failures have ALSO stalled the engine due to fuel starvation...

Lessee, what happens when the engine quits while in motion - as it WILL when the injection pump dies... Power brakes quickly are lost as is power steering - wonder how THAT scenario would play while towing a 12,000 lb. trailer down steep grade at 60 MPH in heavy traffic...

NO, they're not usually that dramatic - but which is smarter planning - for a BEST, or WORSE case scenario? *I* don't plan on having any flat tires, either - but I dern sure DO carry a spare tire!

Cars/trucks "can" fail, but if a part that can cause a serious problem, constantly fails on a large number of trucks then this is a recall item. Just like tires that constantly fail are recalled. I hope no one ends up being killed before this issue is addressed.

I could care less if it ends up being Cummins, Carter or Dodge that ends up having to pay for the poor design and execution of the lift pump in our 24 valve trucks.

The safety issue is probably a small one, I sent a complaint mainly so they will fix the lift pump problem. and if they do it was worth it.
