Just to avoid problems for others doing this work..... I discovered the retorque when reinstalling is no where near as much ft-lbs. Reason is-there is a compresion fitting in there, when new. Once it's compressed, renstalling the nut takes surprisingly little tq..... maybe 40 ft-lbs?
Not good to over tighten, I was told.

Got that right! Took me over an hr, and 2 cans of Brake & Parts Cleaner to get my pretty aluminum alloy wheels spotless on the backside.

recheck your torque, on a dana 70 the retorque is like 250lbs, it does not have a crush sleeve like a typical diff, even with 250ftlbs they are known to back off, ( I went to 2 different rear end shops and both of them said to "impact" the nut back on using a cheap low powered impact)
as with anything you can always use a chisel/punch to mark both the nut and pinion and line them up to get it back to the orginal "torque"

The part numbers for replacing the pinion seal on a Dana 70 are SKS numbers.......

1. SKS Seal = 18896
2. SKS Speedi-Sleeve = 99187

I decided to drain the differential to get a good clean surface to seal for the RTV on the pinion seal, and that meant I needed to go back to the parts store for a gasket and 4 qt's of gear oil. Took me about 3 hours including a trip back to the parts store.

That Speedi-Sleeve sure is cool. That took a whole 5 mins. Very cool product.

So these two p/n are the correct match to install the sleeve plus seal....or is there a diff seal p/n for use w/out the speedi sleeve. If it's apart I might as well install the speedi sleeve, correct? thanks

I replaced the pinion seal and all seems good, no leaks! Removed the axle w/8mm wrench and pinion nut w/impact. The hardest part was getting the old seal out. I chisseled a notch on part of the seal and then used a slide hammer to remove it. Installed the standard new seal w/gasket sealant, greased the rubber seal. I then installed the speedi sleeve over the pinion as it had a very small wear grove...I mean very small!
If replacing I'd recommend the speedi sleeve no matter what. You have it apart and it's easy! All of the parts were from rockauto.com $48.

If any one would like, PM your email and I will send you the directions from the FSM. It clearly details how to change the seal. You should start by lifting the rear end and remove the tires and brake drums(or make sure they are not dragging). Then you need to measure the torque it takes to rotate the pinion(drive shaft has already been removed). Then you remove the nut(mark location) and yoke. Pull old seal. Install new seal. Install Pinion and Nut, tighten nut to 440 lbs. Rotating torque measurement should be the original number +5 inch lbs. Tighten Pinion nut in 5 ft lb increments until you reach the correct rotating torque.
This info is for the D80, I have the info and specs for 60, and 70's

I put Royal Purple in mine and the product says you don't need any additive. So far everything is doing well.

Thanks Purple. No one had responded on my orig request so I had to tackle it either way. All of the above details were followed and the nut is 1/8th from its original factory location.
