Injection Pump Code

My buddy called me with some questions on his 2001. i was able to get him to pull the codes from the cluster. P-1693 and ECU-0216. i know what this could mean. he has no fuel pressure gauge. it is maintained filter wise. it has 66,000 miles and still under warranty. what has happened is lack of power and white smoke. i assume the lift pump is weak for sure. does this also mean that his injection pump has problems? how many have replaced the lift pump with no other injection pump problems. he is a long way to get to a dealer so he would like info. so he can plan his approach to the dealer or a cummins shop. thanks.

From what I have learned here, as soon as you see the 0216 code, it is a given that the VP is toast. I personally would leave that code there and get it to a dealer. What I understand, if you just replace the LP, then it won't be but a couple of weeks before the VP is replaced.

that is what i was afraid of. he will have to go and see if they will replace both the lift and injection pumps. he needs to get a fuel pressure gauge.
