How often do you change your oil

I have been changing my oil every 5000 miles and filter every 10,000.

I have been told by some I change it too often, and others say not often enough. The truck is usually highway driven, seldom in town.

I change oil and filter @5000 and have for the last 700,000 miles

change your filter too, why dump a quart of dirty oil in with the clean.

My oil is fairly clear/clean at 5000 miles, thats why I change filters every other change. I think I am changing oil too often.

I change every 3,000 miles with a new filter. I know too often right? One of the benefits being a diesel tech.

I don't have an owners manual, but I thought the interval was 7500 severe duty and 15000 standard duty. I change mine once a year, I drive less the 5k a year with my truck as it not my DD

dieseldude4x4, you must have a bypass?

Dual remote system. I ran my 1989 over four years and 60,000 miles with the same system and the oil was still coming back well into the good range. I just hate lying around under a vehicle can you tell?

At least with a 4X4 you don't need a creeper to change your oil +1

That's true. I usually change the main oil filter every 5000 and then both at 25,000 so it's not like the same exact oil is in there the whole time. The main filter dumps nearly a quart every time and both take a lot more. Both oil filters are mounted on the front cross member so I can change them in minutes.

I go by the book under the severe service recommendations. Oil and filter every 6,000kms and a fuel filter every 12,000kms. Oil and filters are pretty cheap insurance against breakdowns and engine wear. I do my trans and diff oils way too often as well, once per year regardless of mileage. I still feel that oil and lube is cheap insurance. YMMV!

Cheers!

Mike
