How long will a 24 valve Cummins last?

i was looking at buying a 99 dodge 2500 with a cummins and a 5 speed and i was just wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect for engine life it has had the crap pulled out of it and if i was just to use as a daily driver?

As long as it was maintained properly, the body will fall off the frame before the engine goes bad.

My 99 has 165k on it now and is still going strong. I did just put a tranny in it though. But with the 5spd you wont have that problem.

made 320 and some change, before a very rare cracked block, was still running strong when the block broke.(I pulled trailers with it since it had 50k on it)

Mines an 01, but i have a little over 230 on mine on the factory injection pump, I say go for it. Is the 53 block something to look for on a 99?

as long as the vp going out doesnt count as failing, FOREVER.

there are people with CTDs that have over 1 mill on the clock

redneckwilly 01-27-2008 07:02 PM

my mechanic's 01 just turned over 760,000 km's. Hes been through his fair share of parts but nothing extreme. It's still running strong.

90k - lift pump
99k - Vp44
110k - Melted #3 Piston due to a Injector Nozzle Breaking, Rebuilding the engine now.

I was hoping for better mileage on mine. But it didnt happen.

I got 344,000Kms on my 01, a local salvage yard had an older 91-92 1 ton flat deck for hauling semi parts on, owner claimed it thad 3.5MILLION KMS on it!!

I just saw a 2001 that my buddy sold to a guy years ago. It now has 506,XXX Miles on it, Pulling a horse trailer nearly all of those miles. Its beat up, but still goes down the Interstate just fine.

Yes, there were a lot of 53 blocks in the 99 trucks.

18-20 mpg in a rural setting!
At least 300-350,000 miles before possible major repairs.... pending quality of maintenance (as mentioned above).

Good Luck

How long will it last?

I have a 2001 Dodge 3/4 ton truck with the 24 valve Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. It also has the six-speed automatic transmission. My truck has 100,000 miles on it give or take and the only thing I have had to do to it other than put fuel and oil in it is to put in a single fuel injector at around 63,500 miles. I am the original owner and I will never get rid of this truck. Have never had an accident in it that was my fault so other than a few nicks and dents that the body shop took care of, the truck looks great and runs even better. So, the moral of the story is, if you take care of it, it will take care of you.

My 1999 flatbed has 181,000 miles on it. The VP44 blew up at 180,960 ten years ago. I let the truck sit for 3-4 years then replaced the VP44 from Thoroughbred Diesel. I also bought an Airdog 100 from them at the same time. The lift pump failed in 2 miles and I just parked the truck for another 6 years. The tank sat full with diesel for 10 years. Long story short, I had to remove the truck from where I had it stored so I finally decided to get it running. Airdog replaced the failed lift pump no questions asked. I installed the new one, bled to lines and the truck fired right up and runs perfect. I’m doing some upgrades like installing gauges, wheels, dually bed, new tires etc. I’m currently chasing a brake light problem and need to replace two of the transmission cooler lines as they rubbed together and I have a pin hole leak in one of the lines.

Performance wise aside from a 4” mrbp exhaust it’s all stock.

My 99 dual 5spd has 450k on it. Mostly highway with no trailer. It has pulled heavy a few times, maybe 10k total. 3rd gear grinds if you don’t double clutch but otherwise it runs great.
