Here we go again- Another Turbo failure.
 

A couple of weeks ago, my turbo seized on my completely stock truck with only 82K miles on it. The local shop rebuilt it and said it appeared one of the wheels shattered and it did not look like an oil related failure. $450 dollars later I am back running again. When I installed the rebuilt unit, I aimed the oil line into a container and cranked it over, a good solid stream of oil shot out of the line so I figured all is good. The turbo failed again in less than 50 miles. Now the shop is saying the bearing is showing lack of oil. I cut open the oil filter and it is perfectly clean with no debris at all. The oil line is in perfect condition. The turbo shop said they saw a 5.9 that had a crack in the oil pump which was filling the oil with air bubbles but not affecting oil pressure. Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this would be appreciated.

With only 82K miles, why did you pay anything? You we're still under warranty, especially with no mods.

He's got an 2001.... I know I know, the 5/100k warranty doesn't start until the expiration of the 3/32.... [tapdshut]

I have read here on DTR that the Cummins 5 year warranty begins at the end of the 3/36 Dodge warranty. I have asked 3 local dealers if this is true and they all said no...."your truck does not have an 8 year 136,000 mile warrany." My truck is nearly 7 years old, so if Cummins will in fact warranty this WHERE DO I START THE CLAIM PROCESS? Anyone have a phone number?

You really gotta fight it out with them, maybe even go directly to chrysler about it. Ofcourse the dealers are gonna turn ya down.

Great. I don't know how people put up with unreliable vehicles....who has the time for it? This CTD is the first unreliable vehicle I have ever owned.

I wouldn't hold your breath trying to get a dealer to fix it under warranty. My above post was meant to be "tongue in cheek". :cool:

I would bet on a faulty rebuild! other than that check your oil drain if its plugged the turbo will starve for oil... if its clean with no blockage, then its a crappy rebuilt...I cant see bubbles in the oil causing bearing failure in 50miles! and it would show up when you ran the engine with the oil feed line off.

I think the shop is blaming you for their mistake.

you didn't actually run the engine with no oil going to the turbo bearings?

No, I just cranked it over. It is definately possible it was a bad rebuild, but that is impossible to prove at this point. I am going to Tee in a pressure tap and install a temporary pressure guage before I run it again...at least I will be able to verify oil pressure to the turbo. If I knew of a good shop I would just let someone else handle this, but I have NEVER had a vehicle worked on that I did not have to take back again and again until it was fixed properly. Any other pointers?

nickgs' tip was a good one. the oil can't flow through the turbo if it can't get out. might want to make sure they didn't leave a piece of rag in the housing.

The housing and the drain are perfectly clean. This is what makes this problem such a head scratcher.....low miles and impeccable maintenance. Everything appears to be in working order, I wish I could actually find a problem even if it is my own fault.....at least then I could fix it and be done with it.
