8.4 volts from ecm to lift pump relay

my sons truck died on side of road, we checked and just a quick squirt of fuel from LP then nothing. We replaced LP with air dog system but still same. Power from ecm is only 8.4 volts which isn’t enough to keep relay on. Can’t prime system if LP won’t run. Think maybe bad connection at ecm causing low volts or ecm bad? Going to try powering LP relay and see if this helps

While starting the ECM will do 50% duty cycle on the lift pump.
A voltmeter reading at that moment will be misleading. If you bump the starter you should have several seconds of full power to the LP (or in your case the relay)

We might be able to help, you could always give us a call! +1-888-875-2958 There's never a good place to break down, but I think the side of the road away from home is up there on worst. Along with breaking down on vacation.

So for all you people just wondering what been going on with this dodge and the 1st timer diesel mechanic. I installed a fuel pressure gauge about 9 months ago to watch lift pump pressures and wired the intank lift pump to run continually on when key was on( I know you said not to). And it has had 20K miles on it in last 9 months towing a trailer all over the country running great.

I got call thats its now down on power and overheating when under load. Again the non diesel mechanic is trying to figure it out. Saw that the radiators on these get clogged and pulled it to look......wow.

So replaced radiator and t-stat and took it for drive, no issues with overheating and the OBD2 scan gauge says it still had 33psi of boost but seems down on power. ?

Watched the lift pump fuel pressure and guess what....

Checked codes and get P0216

So what would next step be? Replace lift pump (obviously) put it all back together and see if vp44 is dead? Is there a way to test vp44 so I know if that need replacement too before I start this project.?

Thanks all!

First off, yes that was probably the source of your overheating, re route the puke bottle to help with it in the future.

As for the P0216, you really need to see what the pressure really is, a 0-100 non damped gauge is just a guess, it is not remotely accurate at that low end of the scale. P0216 can indeed be caused by low or no fuel pressure, so put a 0-30 or better yet, 0-15 gauge on it and see if you are pulling it down under power. If so, address the issue, get your 7 PSI min at WOT or so and clear the P0216 and see if it returns.
