Help!! rear end noise
The noise sounds like it is coming from the right rear. At first i thought it was an exhaust leak, but that doesnt seem to be the problem. I had the rear breaks inspected about a week ago to see if that where the noise was coming from but they checked out ok. It sounds like metal rubbing, I notice the sound only when i am coasting and my tailpipe is close to the curb. I have no idea where the sound is coming from, any help would be greatly appreciated.

What year and model? Could be backing plate hitting drum or if truck is late model hitting disk rotor.

Maybe it's rear discs with one pad worn to metal. Some techs will miss one worn out pad if the others look like new, and that's pretty common on these trucks.

It is a 1999 2500, 4 wheel drive. I can only hear the sound if I open the passenger side window. I also was wondering if it was possible if pieces of rust could have flaked off into the exhaust which is causing the noise. Their are no leaks in the exhaust, i checked that out. When i took it to the brake place they said that somehow the backing plate was bent and so they bent it back out, didnt help one bit.

have the front brakes been checked? sounds can play games with your head, and be coming from the front, but sounds like it's coming from the rear.

I was wondering when someone was going to poke fun at the title. I thought i was creative with that one. Well i jacked up the right side and rotated both the front and rear tires, noticed a rubbing sound on the front right tire, took the tire off and sure enough the backing plate was touching the rotor. All fixed now, thanks for the input!
