My friend's 98.5 has a 53 block with 250K miles and no crack. He was NOT happy when I told him about this issue. The truck supposedly had RV275s when he purchased it at 140K miles. He added an Edge Comp box to it, gages, and 4" exhaust shortly after he purchased it and still has no issues. Knock on wood.

My 99 had 75K on it when it cracked, after towing the tractor up a mountain at 75MPH (Love that PM3). The drag racing before that never bothered it. I with a Cummins mechanic I know, who said it is the torque twisting the block that makes it crack. This would make sense in my case, as the twisting of the block (torque) is more sgnificant when pulling up a mountain than drag racing.

I just purchased a 97, and haven't had any direct experience with this, but my previous boss had two 99's with 53 blocks that were used daily to pull enclosed trailers, and both cracked this past winter. One let loose in early January, the other in late February. Both trucks had over 200k miles, I don't know the specifics though. Being the guy he is, he simply welded the blocks and put em back to work. I haven't heard much of it since, but did see one of the truck getting flogged around town. I doubt it's the fix Cummins had in mind, but the trucks are still making him money, so more power to him.

120k miles, 53 block and no cracks. This on a truck that weighs 7 tons empty and is frequently loaded to 13 tons. Also gearing is very low, it takes a lot of rpms to move the truck, the 120k miles would really be the equivalent of 200k on a Ram.

I've re-read all the posts so far, and it seems like most if not all of the cracked blocks were 98-99, It's hard to tell as some folks did not post the year and I assumed they were posting about the veh in their sig. Are there certain years more likely to crack than others?? or is the "53" on both sides have any bearing?? just trying to fiqure out my odds...
Keep the info cummin (LOL) from the data posted it looks like I stand a 12% chance of having a leak.
