Just rolled 175k, no cracks---53 only stamped on drivers side (I hear there are some with both sides).

Cracked at 140k miles.....Cummins covered it because I reported a loss of coolant before the warranty was up. I had to pay labor $1700. Truck was stock at that time.....well almost.

Mine has a build date of Mar 2000 it has "53" on both sides and has 300,000 Kilometers on it, and no cracks. I bought it 4wks ago and have logged 4000Kms, and 160hrs of driving, (I'm a courier driver), It wont take me long to rack up the miles/hours

Maybe Haulin In Dixie will chime in.....he had TWO that cracked.

Everydaydiesel - if you are seriously in the market for a CTD - search until you find one without a 53 block. Its just too expensive and too big of a hassle to fix it if it does crack. Why put yourself through that?

Agreed...I have a cracked 53 and it cracked at roughly 340,000 km. I used to be one of the guys that said that it wasn't common to crack or a very big deal to have a 53 block. After mine cracked, some researched showed that the problem was much more common than what I was initially led to believe. If you want my .02, don't buy a CTD with a 53....IMO, it isn't worth the risk....it certainly isn't a risk that I'm willing to assume anyway.

Ive been saying this ALL along - but the problem is that many people dont WANT to believe its a problem. Its just easier to say "Its not going to happen to me".

Read the posts here. As these engines get more and more miles on them, I see more cracked blocks.

JMO, FWIW.
