Hard start / Possible electrical problem
 

Ok, I have looked all over the forums and can't seem to find the problem.

Recently (over the last four - six months or so), my pickup acts like the clutch switch is not connecting. I have replaced the clutch switch, and even bypassed it to test the mechanism. It turns on fine, but when I turn the key switch to the "start" position, it won't connect. I have to push the clutch in anywhere from three to 10 times, before it starts just fine. When something finally connects, it starts and runs just fine. It only has 133K on it (yeah, I baby it quite a bit). It seems worse when it is cold, but not constant on that either.

So, any guesses?

I have read over your post a few times and I cannot tell for certain, does the starter work consistently when the clutch switch is bypassed? If the starter is inconsistent even with the clutch swith bypassed then I suspect your starter contacts are buring out.

Every once-in-a-while you can find an ignition switch that will cause that condition, just as a worn out starter relay can. But the most common cause is the starter contacts, as Tallguy pointed out.

I'm voting starter contacts also...

An auto electric shop should have the HD contacts for around 6 bucks, my armature looked good so I just reused it. Mine has been starting fine for 40K....

If you are at all handy with tools, it's a simple fix as Tallguy pointed out.
