grinding sometimes when turning ?
Occasionally when turning right after about 1 full turn of the steering wheel I can feel a grinding through the steering wheel and I can also hear it.Of course the first thing I did was check the power steering fluid level and when that was ok I went ahead and changed the fluid since it had a mild burnt smell(burnt p.s. fluid doesnt smell nearly as bad as burnt auto tranny fluid though). It still does it some but it doesnt do it every time I turn the wheel. If anyone else has ever had anything like this let me know .Maybe my alignment could be off but it tracks straight and doesnt pullto either side.By the way,the truck is an '01 2500 ec,lb 4x4 with about 81000 on it.Thanks
I just found out I need a full front end rebuild on my 01. Ball joints, tie rod ends, track bar. We jacked up the front and put a bar under the tires and lifted. Everything moves about 1/4" to 3/16". I was getting the occasional grinding noise and thought it might be the hubs, but they appear to be ok, for now. This is work I can't do myself. Anybody know what the tolerances on the ball joints are? My steering is getting a little sloppy.
I'll put money on the driver side hub if its making that noise when turning right, passenger side if it does it when you turn left. Mine made the same kind of noise when the hub bearings where going bad, gets worse as time goes on and the miles add up. Jack it up and check for play and spin it and listen for any odd noises. Just finished doing my passenger side yesterday @93,000 miles.
