Thumbs down Got some real problems

Ok gurus pulled the head off my truck things looked good except #5 hole the piston looks good . The top ring isnt sealing its black with carbon top 1 inch. The valves on that cylinder are sealing cant see any cracks but get this the intake valves are both carboned up i mean a lot of carbon but they have a good seal. The rest of the cylinder except for the top 1 inch you can see the cross hatches no scars no scoring looks real good. Iam pretty sure the head is cracked at the intake ports.
The truck would smoke and miss till it warmed up then quit smoking and run strong untill it would cool off. The top of the piston looks real good .
Iam taking the head and some pics to cummins tomorrow. I think the walls on that cylinder is washing till it warms up. As soon as my son e-mails me the pics I will post. Any ideas welcome.

i suggest you look real hard at #5 injector........ and also did you do a compression test?

Did you look ath the valve stem seals? If you have them leakig and the valve clearance is too tight you will run into similar troubles. I second the notion on the injector. If possible have them tested. (All 6)

Thanks for the come backs. I took the head to cummins this morning the man with 30 years said i had a broke ring. I cleaned the head lapped the valves in all had good seats replaced the seals. I guess some of you may have missed my post last week in the help forum my problem started with the VP44 going south I drove the truck quite a lot I guess in denial adjusted valves pulled all injectors had them pop tested still had a problem then replaced the IP still had a problem lossened exhaust found what i thought was #4 and five thought I had a blown head gasket there was a lot of smoke hard to tell swapped injectors with one and 3 finnaly pulled head. The man at cummins said the pump malfunction had washed the cylinder wall and probably cabon built and broke the ring I was running it to much cold.
The pan is in the process of coming off bought rings for that cylinder . Have to raise the engine its realy been fun during all my stuf i ran into a guy who has a wrecked 2000 3500 said he would take 2000 for the engine going to look at it in the morning. Sorry for the long post thanks guys

My guess would have been the top ring also. To me the clue was that the carbon stopped down the cylinder.
How did it look when you dropped the piston?

cant believe it :

Finialy got something to raise the engine enough to clear the oil pan. Guys i cannot believe what i found . #5 piston has no i mean does not have a top ring at all the second compression ring is broken in 5 OR 6 pieces there is no scoring in the hole there are no marks at all on the walls the head the valves this thing was put together with no top ring to say the least iam po ed . Since I bought the truck it has puffed some smoke on start up not real bad unless real cold. The truck had 36,000 miles when I bought it . It has 94000 now guys I pulled a 9800 pound trailor here in the mountains to the East coast and the gulf coast a lot ran a superchip with no problems at all . The guy who bought the truck new traded at the ford dealer that is where I bought it . Iam still in disbelief the piston has no marks on it and it has a lot of carbon down to the second ring the top ring gland looks great just black with carbon. This thing was running good after warmup on the oil control ring I still cannot explain this whole deal. I got some pics coming right now iam resting I finialy found some reason for the truck acting like it did
