I'm replacing my trans lube tomorrow in my NV5600. I plan on adding the 6th qrt through the top of the trans. Does anyone have detailed info to get the shift tower off? I've got the trim and the 4x4 shifter to worry about.

 

when ever I change my fluid I use the top bolt hole on the pto cover to get in the extra bottle. to much hassle with the tower and making sure nothing falls in the trans. if you have a squeeze bottle with a tip that is what I use, takes a little longer but less hassle to me,

 

Its just a bunch of phillips screws that hold the boot and console on. The 4by shifter boot just snaps into the console, give it a good yank. The tower is held on by 4 bolts. Can't remember if they are cap screws, or socket head cap screws.

 

On many vehicles you can snake a clear plastic hose from above (ie engine compartment or fender well)into the fill hole. I haven't checked the Ram. Pull whichever fill plug you decide to use & buy hose to fit. Perhaps jam a funnel into the top end of the hose. Look up the capacity in the FSM & start there if you've drained it. This works for filling anything under the truck. Remember to pull the fill plug before the drain plug.

 

yes I have done this and its still a slow process, my squeeze bottle I have isn't to slow. but then I do the 5600 I take a off both pto sides change the filter I have on the pto cover get in to the tranny with gloves and be amazed on the crap that is left in the bottom of the tranny. thanks for the tip.

 

Tate, you were right. It was very easy to get to the shift tower. This is the 2nd time I've changed tranny fluid and from now on, I'll be filling through the shift tower. That was much easier than trying to fill with a squeeze bottle while laying on my back.

Dieselwrks, you were right about the amount of crap in the bottom of the tranny. Cleaned it all up and filled with Royal Purple. If the RP does not work out, I'll probably replace with Redline or Amsoil.

For those 1st timers trying to get to the shift tower, here's what I did.
1. Pull back the bottom of the shifter boot to gain access to the phillips screws.
2. After unscrewing the boot from the console, unscrew the shifter from the shift tower stub.
3. The 4by shifter boot just snaps into the console. Like Tate said, just pull up on the boot and it will pop out.
4. Unscrew all the cap screws that attach the console. You will need to remove the rubber pieces in the cup holders to gain access to 2 screws and there's also screws under the 4by shift boot.
5. Once the console is loose, snake the 4by shift boot through and remove the console.
6. There's another boot covering the shift tower. Remove the cap screws and slide the boot off of the shift tower.
7. Remove the 4 bolts holding down the shift tower and remove the shift tower.
8. Fill the tranny and re-assemble.
