Gear ratios
Alright im looking at buying a new (to me) rig. Ive looked at a number of rigs and have been told about several over the phone. I keep coming up against the same problem, people are telling me that the trucks have 3:73 in them. I was told by some one here that 02 and older years dont have them just 3:5_ and 4:10 but i keep on getting told that a trucks got 3:73.
Right know im most curious about 02s and if thats possible because im going to go look at one 100miles away and the guy is telling me positivly that they are 3:73 i dont want to make the trip though to find out that they are 4:10s and that the guy was all jacked up.
Anyway i hope i wasnt rambling thank you

As we discussed in a past thread, 2nd gen CTD's were only available from the factory with 3.54's or 4.10's. It is perfectly possible that the previous owner installed aftermarket 3.73, though, it isn't likely. The build sheet on an 02 will be in the glove box but it will only say 3.54 or 4.10.
All 3rd gens came either equipped with the 3.73 or 4.10....this could be causing some confusion?
If a gear swap has taken place by the previous owner, the ONLY way to be absolutely certain what gears were installed is to remove the diff cover and observe the ring and pinion tooth count that is stamped on the side of the ring gear.

I know on my rig in the glove box that it a series of numbers what numbers would i be looking for to know gear ratio and what kind of re end it has (posi etc). Thanks for all your help.
On 2nd gen trucks, the ratio is stamped on the tag on each diff cover. If it has limited slip, there MAY be an additional tag saying Use Limited Slip Additive. You won't find this info on the glovebox or door sticker unless it's a 3rd gen. Some trucks MAY have it on an underhood sticker.
If you can get the truck's serial number, you can get a Dodge dealer to run it through their computer to get a build sheet (option list). They may get tired of doing this if you have 4 or 5 different trucks to look at. I believe they will do this on the Dodge website, but it takes several days.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the 02's have a build sticker on the underside of the hood - it was relocated to the glovebox....I think the location was changed in 00 or 01? As Displacedtexan mentioned, this sticker says in plain english what the ratio is and there is nothing to decode. Again, this info is a moot point if a gear swap has been done.
My used 02 had neither... under hood or glove box.
Get VIN # and go to dealer. 'Build Sheet' with list of factory options should only take parts dept. 30 sec to produce! My dealer did it for free.
