Question Fuel Pressure Idiot Light

As a low cost alternative to a fuel pressure gauge, could a pressure switch set for about 8 PSI be installed at the fuel pressure test point and connected to an indicating light in the cab. Whenever this light would come on under heavy throttle conditions, it would mean that it was time for a new lift pump. It is my understanding is that this would be the first sign of impending trouble. What do you think??

BD sells a low pressure LED kit for $50-$60. I was going to go that route but I came to my senses.

It just makes more sense to have a gauge in order to get a baseline pressure and then to monitor fluctuations/trends in your FP.

The BD Led comes on I think at around 4psi which is to late for me.

Why not just put in a gauge? It's easy to do. I have mine mounted on the bottom of the dash, to the right of the ash tray. I hooked up the gauge light to the ash try light so it dims with the dash lights. Very easy to install, but if you need help any gear head buddy could do it.

I don't rely on idiot lights.
By the time they come on (if they come on), it's usually too late.
I'd rather see a oncoming failure trouble early and remedy it then.

BUT something is better then nothing.....i do think you have a good idea. I dont think you need to spend $50 or $60 on it! Would be as easy as getting a Hobbs Pressure Switch and running a Ingition Hot wire into the switch, then run the other wire to a 5 pin relay and go from there to your light. Simple and would have maybe $15-20 in parts tied up in it. Sure a gauge is better...but its better then nothing......

i think it's a real good idea. you could mount the whole thing right on the schrader and not have to worry about running the dang fuel line into the cab with you, i don't like the idea and never will. you're switch idea is the way volkswagen protected it's engines from low oil pressure for 40 or 50 years. i'm checking into a switch rated for diesel tomorrow. thanks for the idea.....later

I put a low pressure light in my truck a couple of months ago. I didn't want 3 gauges. I just put a pressure switch between the fuel/water sep. and the VP44. Then a little LED right between the pyro. and EGT gauge.

Where exactly would you find a suitable pressure switch? I have heard the word “Granger” mentioned several times....but i also hear they make their stuff from Gold Ingots. Funny! Doesn’t look like it! Any suggestions where to find a cheaper solution?

Mud,

I used a Cole Hersee 86263 switch that I purchased at a local semi truck supply. Look at the following link under "Oil, air vacuum & fuel pump. I think it only cost $7.
