Fuel leak at fuel tank module
Fuel leak at fuel tank module
Greetings everyone! I have had a recurring fuel leak problem and I've finally isolated the leak to the tank module. The fuel appears to be coming from around one side of the module itself but only occurs when the tank is mostly full. I've tried to move the module by hand and it seems to be snug. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can try to tighten the thing without removing the fuel and electrical connections. I've thought about using a lube filter strap wrench but I don't have one that adjusts to that large of an opening. Thanks.
Remove your left rear tire, then the plastic inner fender. Get yourself a screwdriver(slotted) long enough to reach the tabs on the module ring. Tap easy on the end of the screwdriver, once you find the right spot to spin the ring you will eventually tighten the ring. Its a slow tedious process but it beats lifting the bed. Frank
I found the source of the fuel leak. The locknut that holds the fuel module in place was loose. Don't ask me how that happened because my Chrysler service manual states that the locknut should be torqued 18 to 32 ft lbs. Anyway I discovered this when I was able to slightly rotate the locknut with one hand. I tightened the locknut by hand as far as I could, then I gently tightened it some more using a small block of wood and a hammer. There is an arrow on top of the module and two marks stamped into the top of the fuel tank approximately in the 2 o'clock position when looking down at the module from the drivers side. The arrow should be aligned between these two marks to prevent the module's float from contacting the side of the tank. I was on my back doing this from the driveshaft side of the fuel tank. I just thought that I would pass this along in case someone might be interested. As a side note, my service manual states that the " fuel line connectors, roll over valve and fuel gauge electrical connector should all be pointed to the drivers side of the vehicle when the module is in the correct position". This is not necessarily true regarding the connector on the roll over valve. This connector on my truck was pointed to the passengers side. It sits in a replaceable rubber gromment and can be rotated. I discovered this when I was tightening the module. One more thing, be careful when working with the fuel tank module. I have a friend that works in the parts department at a local Dodge dealership. According to him, this module lists for $435.00. Obviously it can be had for less than that if you can get a discount. He said that he would sell me one for $348.00. Thank the lord I didn't need one.
