fuel filter change

I've changed my fuel filter....ALOT. Just this one time, tonight, the truck wouldn't start right away. I cranked it and stopped about 6X. Eventually, the truck cranked and then it ran. Was there just air in the line that I introduced when I took that cap off. i guess it worked itself out...? Runs fine now. Just curious as to what that was.

Thanks

Just air that's all. Try bumping the starter for 1/2 a second. That will turn the lift pump on for 30 seconds and help cycle air out of the fuel lines/ filer reservoir.

Hey Chainzaw, what's the procedure to get the pump to cycle for 30 secs? I could only get mine to do it one time after a filter change. Lately I just top off the canister with fresh diesel and fire'er off. Thanks, Kurt

I don't think I have ever been able to start mine right up, now I just crack #1 and bleed the air. Even had to do it on a friends truck when all I did was check his fuel pressure for him via the schrader valve. He had a dead LP so I kind of expected that.

To start the lift pump for the 25 seconds or whatever it is...you just bump the starter, but don't start the truck. This should kick on the lift pump for 25ish seconds.

About twice a year, I drain the filter canister & clean the misc particles out. Then I refill the canister with a 1 gallon can, then replace my filter. I do bump my starter once for good measure. Last year, on a trip to New Orleans from KY, while I was sleeping, my idiot brother in law ran it out of fuel. After putting 4 gallons in the tank, I took out the filter & filled the canister, then bumped the starter for 25 seconds 4 times & it started up. After bumping it, I just listened for it to stop, then bumped it again. I wouldn't crack the fuel lines, unless that didn't work.

Sometimes you might have to crack an injector line with a wrench to get the air out.

I guess I've never gotten that much air in my fuel lines. Lucky I guess.
