front axel u joint replacement

Hi guys,
Needing to change my front drivers wheel u joint and was wondering do I have to remove the diff cover and is there some kinda retainer or will the axle just slide out? Is this a doable job for a regular mechanical guy?

I believe you have to remove the wheel bearing and slide the axle out. If by regular mechanical guy you mean has a lot of time and patience (and a BFH), then yes....
