Friend's 01 just died!!
My friend has a really nice and totally stock 01 CTD. He started it up a few weeks ago and went in the house for a minute. When he came back out the truck had died. He could not get it restarted. He put a new LP on it and it still won't start. He even hotwired the LP to make sure it was working. He says that there is no fuel at the injectors although I am not sure how he checked that. I know the obvious answer is to check the VP44 but is there a Fuel shut off solonoid on a VP44 truck? Is there a way to check the VP44 to see if it is working properly? He says he hears clicking under the hood when he turns the key on but he doesn't know where it is coming from. Isn't there a schrader valve on the VP44 where you can attach a fuel pressure guage? If so, what is the pressure it should be putting out? Could it be that he may simply still have air in the system from the LP changeout? How do you bleed air out of the 2nd gen 24 valve system?
Sorry for so many questions in one post but I haven't had a 2nd gen for so long that all that knowledge has gone from my mind....

There is a valve on the VP44 to check pressure coming in. Has is disconnected the hose the VP from the LP to check FP? Sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously though, check to make sure the LP is actually moving fuel. If it is, crack open the main line into the VP and BUMP the motor. This will kick in the LP for about 20 seconds. He "should" see fuel start to come out of the line. Once he has fuel there, then you can crack the injector lines to make sure fuel is where it needs to be.
Theres no fuel shutdown solenoid on a 24V.
Yes, you can check fuel pressure at the test port on the VP-44. You will have to take the schraeder valve out and connect the appropriate guage. The test port is right on the pump and just before the inlet to the pump:

You should be seeing a minimum of 10 psi on a starter bump (post filter)
Sounds like its air bound since he just put the new LP in. Have you tried cracking a couple of inectors and bleeding the lines? Try #1 & #3 injectors.
You can also scan the truck for codes.
How did he know he needed a new lift pump without haveing a fuel pressure guage?

The clicking is under the hood. He did not know for sure that he needed a LP. He just decided to try that first. He says there's no fuel at the injectors but I will have to ask him how exactly he checked that. Can you just go buy a fuel pressure guage that connects to the schrader valve at any auto parts store? Or is that going to be a specialized tool that will be hard to find?
I will have him crack that line on the VP44 and look for fuel.
Thanks for the replies fellers........

As far as I know that is a special fitting on the hose (must connect to a schraeder valve)...
It should look like this: http://www.vulcanperformance.com/ser...w-fdsh-/Detail
They also sell just the fitting and you can add your own line:

Sounds like to me just need to bleed out injectors. Just changed a lp on a 01 ctd and it took about 20 min of bleeding to finally get the fuel to the injectors. Crack a couple lines going to the injectors and turn key on and bump the start and wait tell it shts off do this numerous times and about every ten times crank for about 15 seconds keep doing this and I bet it will work.
