floating 5 speed?
 

My buddy has a 97 CTD I think and he was telling me the other day that he floats (no clutch) his tranny when he shifts. I tried it in mine the other day and it seem to work just fine, not as easy as the old pete but doable. But I was always under the impression that floating these hyd. clutchs isnt good for them, and hard on the syncros. My buddy said he has done it since he had his truck, which I think is almost a year, and he hasn't had any troubles with it. Is he full of it or is it harmless?

I have gotten myself out of the habit of shifting w/o the clutch, simply because I've heard it's hard on the synchros if you don't make a perfect match all of the time. A perfect match to me is a smooth, resistance free shift to the next gear. There were times when I'd encounter resistance, and even grinding(lost RPM match), so rather than wear the synchros, I opt to use the clutch. I do have experience driving non-synchronized transmissions, the king of four wheel drive, an FWD firetruck with a Waukesha gas and armstrong steering, but it's been awhile since I've driven a beast like that. <br><br>
