There should be a sticker under the hood with the axle ratio on it.

easiest way,

by driving it, 70 mph at 2000 rpms is usually 3.55, 2000 rpms at 60-65 results in 4.10 gears, if all else fails, u can read the VIN, look at the tag on the differential to determine the ratio, and finally, u can request a build sheet for free from ur local dealership, and it will tell ya, again they use the VIN...

They didn't start doing that until 2000 or thereabouts.

I think the earlier trucks had a sticker on the radiator support, or around there.

No factory 3.73 on the seccond gens.

The two easiest ways to see are RPM like Rick said or the tag under the hood behind the grille.

This would also depend on what tranny he has and tire size. I run 70 mph with my NV4500 and 235/85R16s, but when I was running 215/85R16s, it was closer to 65 mph at 2k. And the manuals have a different OD than an auto, .76/.73 for the manuals, .69 for the autos.

If all else fails, jack the rear tires off the ground, mark the driveshaft and a tire and count how many times you have to rotate the driveshaft to get the tire to go one revolution. Or pull the plate off the diff. The ratio or # of teeth will be stamped on the ring gear.
