Question Emergency Brake Cable Question

Replacing the emergency brake cable on a 2000 Ram 2500 with drum brakes. I have a OE cable. It did not come with a spring on the portion on the brake shoe side of the backing plate. The spring on the original cable has ends on it small enough the bead on the cable will not allow the spring to come off the original cable and go on the new one. Is the cable I have the incorrect one or is there a trick to swapping the spring to the new cable.

Thanks for your responce! I'll try that. It has to come off to remove the damaged cable, the spring wont go thru the hole in the backing plate!
