Hello, I have a non-starting truck in my drive.
Any help or direction would be gratefully appreciated.

Truck: 2001 Dodge 3500 5.9 24v, 6spd man, 4X4, dually, model ISB 245,
Family YCEXHO359BAX,
Engine # 56789649, Manf date 10-20-2000
140K original miles

Me: non-mechanic but semi mechanical on simple bolt on stuff.
Have regular wrenches, etc but no special tools.

Symptoms: Bogging @ 2K rpm, feels like fuel starvation.
Finally stalled & quit in my driveway.

Codes showing: PCU - P1693, PECU - P0216 & P0230(fuel pump primary circuit) Can't find P1693 & P0216 code listing.

Work done: New fuel filter & cleaned f.f. housing (was very dirty).
Can hear the (lift pump?) cycle when I turn the key.
Had the lift pump replaced 2 years ago (w/ stock one).
Engine turns over but does not fire.

I'll post this and start searching this site for info. Then check back here for any input. Thank you very much in advance.

PS, Is there any way for me to override the system that will not allow me to use the starter to move the truck 10 feet out of my drive? Truck is too heavy to push.

From the top of the posting area your codes are going to cost you some cash unfortunately.

P0216 Fuel Injection pump Timing Malfunciton [new injector pump time]

P1693 Generic fault indicating a fault in the bus or PCM/ECM interface

P0230 Transfer pump circuit out of range

From this data I see that the electronic board in the VP44 may be damaged or burned out, the lift pump is having trouble and the pump can't control timing. This would also be due to possible electronic failure of the VP44 that requires pump replacement.

He is right unfortunately. Time to spend some pretty substantial money on an injection pump and fuel system. Stock stuff just isn't going to cut it... I think thats obvious now.[laugh]


Just go ahead an pick up a new SO VP44 and a good fuel system like an AirDog 165 or something similar. I personally went with a Raptor 150(just the pump, no filters) 1/2" line from the tank to VP44, and a Hellmann fuel sump(instead of a DrawStraw or something similar). Now my set-up may not work for how you want things, but just trying give you some ideas. :cool:

Just talked to the most experienced diesel mechanic in my small town.
He said the same thing about what has probably failed.

His price estimate is $2300 parts & labor.
Regular parts, nothing upgraded.

Does this sound about right?

Is it worth extra money at this time to upgrade/replace anything else related?

get a fuel pressure gauge and upgrade the fuel pump and lines.

Some mechanics don't like it, but you might be able to get a better price on a pump and spend the savings on upgrading the lift pump system. I wouldn't do the stock lift pump again if it were me.

VP44 Pump.

Also if you don't want to go the gauge route, you can just install a Hobbs style switch and warning light for low fuel pressure.

Yes, I whole heartedly believe its worth spending the extra money on an upgraded fuel system... now you don't need anything to support huge hp, but why replace it with the same parts that failed already and are well known for failure in the Cummins world and will again. Spend a bit more extra to assure reliability and be able to support a bit more power if you ever want.
