Crankshaft Position Sensor

Hey Guys,

I got a quick question about the crankshaft position sensor and how it fails. I'm guessing I have a failing sensor at the moment.

The problem is that sometimes while I'm driving, the tach goes down to zero and my check engine light comes on and gives me the crankshaft position sensor fault. If I keep driving the tach eventually starts to work again (sometimes) and then I just clear the code and everything is ok again. On occasion the truck just cranks over and doesn't fire up, and I notice during this time the tach does not move at all. After I wiggle the wiring near the sensor and push in the connector a bit it seems to start eventually. Does this sound like a failing crankshaft sensor, or a wiring issue near the sensor? Any help would be appreciated, as well as a good location to buy a new sensor if it is in fact failing.

Thanks,

Jeff

If you think jiggling the connection helps then definitely clean the connection and use some dielectric grease to help prevent corrosion from causing issues. If that doesnt help then replace the CPS.

Any ideas on where to get a new CPS online if needed?

Thanks,

Jeff

Stay away from the local parts stores, I’ve had two and barely got a year out of each one

Hey guys,

Just a follow-up. I replaced the crank sensor from Geno's garage and no more issues now. Thanks for the help as I really appreciate it.

p0336 ckp code

I got a question. I got a 2000 3500 that throws the p0336 ckp code. I’ve been through the entire engine harness, ohm it, check grounds, replaced ckp sensor, replaced connector etc. went through Cummins breakdown testing on it. The code will clear. Then I go drive it when I hit 2500 rpm the tax drops and throws cel. I disconnect the alt, start the truck, shut if off, reconnect the alt and clear the codes. Drive it again and tac doesn’t drop or throw cel till truck warms up again. Any ideas on that??

Still faulty CPK that has a blackout when it's getting warm?
Does it have the problem if the engine is warm and revved to 2500+ with the alt disconnected- if not check alt brushes and diode board, if yes check for sensor and wiring thermal fault.
