Question Cracked fuel line and hard starts

Relatively new here so bear with me. My truck has been starting hard ocassionaly the past few days, wether it's warm or cold. This morning on the way to work, I smelled fuel. I found the vp44 return line was cracked right where the banjo fitting is brazed to the line. (It was leaking bad). Would the cracked line have anything to do with the hard starts or is it just coincidence that my vp is going out the same time the line cracked? Also, what would cause this line to crack in the first place? Thanks in advance for the help.

With the line being cracked it is probably sucking air in causing a hard start condition.
