cracked block,now what?
Yikes!! a 53 block
There is life after the dreaded crack. I came across a detailed fix using "Muggy Weld Alloy #77". The repair is done with engine in the frame and "run-able".
Wouldn't have the nerve to do it myself but I know a couple of B ticket welders that I would trust with it.
Just waiting for my turn (see sig)

Oh, the irony of it all!
What's this about "Muggy Weld Alloy #77"? My lucky number is also 53. Mine isn't cracked (and hopefully never will) but I'd like to hear some options besides a new $5000 block.

If you are at 160,000 kilometers, then you are right at the warranty cut off which is 100,000 miles.
Gather some info about the 53 block and talk to a dealer you know. It should be replaced under warranty.
Your engine has 7yrs 160K.

I stopped at a small dodge truck dealer who had about 8 used CTD trucks for sale. They were all 2000 and up .
I got out my flash light and looked up under to check the blocks for "53" .
All were "53" except one was a "56"

The post I came across basically had you remove the fender and non vitals for access.
Engine is run up to op temp, shut down and drained of coolant. Helper keeps block at 300 F with small propane torch and infrared thermometer.
Crack is chased and welded, with temperature closely maintained.
Boil up coolant and refill block. Plug in block heater amd let simmer for 24 hours.
It sounds pretty good compared to re-blocking.
Scotty is right though, I would definately pursue the warranty option first with 160 K on the truck.
Good luck, keep us posted on the warranty issue if you pusue it. I'm guessing this is a Canadian truck (kilometers). Mine is at 145 K. Be interesting to see how the Canuk dealers respond eh?
