Cracked 53.......(not again!!!....)
Hi, In 1999 purchase a new 2500 Quadcab/4x4 and the block cracked in usual spot recently (about 3" long) with 127,00 miles. Lot's of nice stuff on the truck and very well maintained, but am not a mechanic and am pretty strapped for cash...I have read lots and lots about the "band-aid" type fixes, but I guess seems none of them last too long...(?) I don't need to push the truck hard any more, and hate to sell it off for a parts/repair truck as I had just done extensive and expensive servicing w/new transfer pump, that had just finally given up, new tires etc. etc. The truck has many sweet aftermarket upgrades (aftermarket tran valve body etc. etc. done back when finances were better for us...and still just a really clean, rust-free truck that I would like to have avail. to me when needed occasionally. I had it all "freshened up" when helping a friend move from Sacramento, CA to Rapid City, SD. Fully loaded truck and trailer and pushed it pretty hard due to time constraints...but hey, that's what it's supposed to be made for...so I thought. Any advice on the least expensive way or availability of a good used/remanufactured block (that is not a 53 of course) out there anyone would share? What other block designation would fit in my truck? Any and all advice would be most appreciated!

Any 98.5-2000 Cummins should work wiht your electronics.
I would look into a shortblock and just transfer over all of the parts you already have onto it from your 53 and don't look back.
There are plenty of Oregon memebers that may be able to lend you a hand with this if you can find a shortblock...

Engine shops?
Thanks ...Any recommendations out there of quality, trusted rebuilders, very familiar with these things on the west coast, preferably the pacific northwest? Or best bets to look for short blocks? Thanks again....Rob

Curious what you did when they had that class action lawsuit a couple years ago on the 53 block, everyone was sent a letter with a couple differant options depending on situation.

I never got a card as I had moved out of state after orig. warranty expiration and I guess they lost track of me here in OR. Too late...missed the boat on that one. Any successful LONG TERM testimonials on the lock & stitch? Thanks.

They would only give you 500 bucks if you met all of the requirements. Your outside of them based on your first post anyway.
I'm going through this right now. it sucks. lets see, three transmissions, one engine and one complete dash........whats next. I would think about what I'm going to do......send the engine block and the cracked dash to their corporate head qaurters with a major complaint. heck I might even buy one share of stock so that I can go to a stock holders meeting and ***** there too. can't wait to see them trying to get rid of a five hundred pound package from their lobby. LOL. Maybe I should turn it into a work of art and donate it to them to put in the lobby as a constant reminder We'll call it the dissatisfied engine!

Also, There are pour in additives that fix blocks just fine regardless of what you are reading. Most of what has been said is only speculation rather than actual experience.
I used one bottle of Bar's Leaks 1109 and have not leaked a drop of coolant since January 2013 My heater core works fine as well. Make sure you remove enough coolant to put the entire bottle in the radiator as you can't add it to the overflow bottle or it will plug the siphon tube. The hotter the engine gets the better it will plug the leak, so don't baby it if you try it.
I've been all over the Southern California desert off road with a cabover camper and up the Grapevine with the pedal buried and no leaks.

I've not seen anything under $4000

Do all 2001's have a "53" block?

I tried searching for info. but had no luck. Where are the casting numbers for the 53 block?
I tried looking at my 01, all I could find was a "23" on the left hand side below the vacuum pump towards the front of the block. Where else would they be? Thanks!
