Cost of water pump replacement?

At a jobsite for a month, Let a good friend use the 2000 2500 to go to the hotel so he didnt need to try to park his 18wheeler. Got a call that there was a green drip and puddle under it. I had no time to deal with it and the next stop on this tour was about 700 miles away, so I called a farmer friend that was a ASE mechanic to fix it. It took a while to get it to repeat the leak but the water pump was the cause. He put a NAPA lifetime in it? He will not give me a bill for what he has done. I want to pay my bills!

Whats a FAIR price for this?

Thanks

My idiot boss paid $460 for shop to do it and he said "that was great price!"
As far as pump it's like $50 at most parts stores
A good mechanic can do it in under an hour

Pump is $50 at parts store. Just did mine and took me two hours, there was a one hour learning curve. An experienced mechanic could do it in less then an hour I'm sure. You might consider giving him a 150$ gift certificate to a nice restaurant to say thank you. That way he's not offended if it cost a bit more or less for him to do. Then he can share with his wife or girlfriend. Just food for thought.

He is just closing up the buliding of a new shop. I was thinking of giving him a couple of "high bay t-8 flourecent" fixtures for that project in trade.

Thanks for the help

+1

1/2" breaker bar on tensioner to loosen belt, slip it off, and two bolts for the water pump. No gasket it uses an o-ring so cleanup is quick. Install pump, put belt back on and top coolant.

I'd shoot him $50 for the hassle factor he saved, personally. Install plus diagnosis. If he doesn't want to take money, a $50 gift might go nicely with the thanks and handshake?

water pump is held on with 2 bolts, could not be any simpler, takes longer for the coolant to drain, than to replace the pump. honestly 1 hour is more than enough time,

I bet he would appreciate a good dinner and drinks.... pay it forward I say

I did mine a few months ago, if it take your mechanic more than 15 minutes, you are paying for his texting, coffee break and time at the lunch wagon.

Dodge/Cummins couldn't have made it easier.

I'd buy your friend a $50 gift card to Outbacks

Is it easy for someone who's mechanically inclined like myself to install a water pump on a Dodge Ram truck 3500 diesel?

If you can change the fan belt and add water to the radiator, you're qualified to change the water pump.

I say that because you have to loosen the fan belt first, then there are 2 small bolts that holds the pump in place. The pump uses an "O" ring so there is no old gasket to clean off. Install the pump, install & tighten the 2 bolts, put the belt on, refill radiator.
