Considering buying a 2nd gen 24v...... Opinions please
I considering buying a 2002 year 2nd gen 24v........ Would I be better off with a 12v or 24v ?
Thanks ! |
I contemplated the same thing, my conclusion is none are bad. 12V is more mechanical engine (no programmers or electronic bolt on aids), a 99 24V is what I ended up getting and so far I love it. The 2002 is a great year to get (rear discs).
What do you want to do with it? |
where do you live. due to certain areas they can be rust belts due to the weather and salt on the roads. lets face it low mile 12v are getting harder and harder they are usually high miles they are lower to maintain to a point and they are solid engines. 24 valves in some case are going to be the same on the rust and miles. 01's and 02's are out there with decent miles. i was going to sell mine but I just did a complete engine rebuild so I guess I will keep it. look on the classifieds on here. its harder and harder to find a cummins that was driven by grandma and was not abused or spent 100% of its time yanking a 5th wheel. good luck.

There is a few out there though. I swung a deal on a 135K mile 98 12v qcsb, unabused, but his wife wouldnt sign the title haha.. So I found my current ride, 99 qcsb 136K miles, every options, runs, drives, looks like brand new, interior even smells new!
Came out of oregon last week :) |
Get the 12v if you can find a decent one where the rest of the truck isn't falling apart. Plan on fixing all of the deferred maintenance (steering, front end, fuel, VP etc.) - especially on a 24V. Just a little search will turn up the common problems. Don't fall in love & over pay.

I was wanting to use it to haul my 1967 Dodge Coronet to the racetrack and a few other small trailers. Nothing too crazy. Mosting pulling under 10k.
I know 12v are getting next to impossible to find not worn out and 1st gens almost cost as much in nice shape with low miles which is rare. Thanks guys ! |
Watch out for the "53" blocks!
I found a nice 1998 Dually with about 130 K on her, stick shift, and in good shape. Turned out she hd the 53 stamp on the block. Dealer had no idea what they had traded for. |
Yep, I looked at a 99, after the test drive I found the 53 stamped on the block, told the dealer there is no way I would buy that thing, walked away.
Altough the 53 block 12V seem to be ok. Just not so great on the 24V |
Is there anything I should look out for ?
Problems ? Do you have to put or is it advisable that a FASS system on the truck ? Are the VP44 pumps questionable on all years ? Thanks guys ! |
i have a 02 and love it. has no problems compared to my buddys 06 common rail.
its mostly how they been treated and maintained. i did put on an airdog 100 3 years ago and have had good luck with it. great thing is any short falls any of these cummins powered dodges have can be fixed. |
I found a 2001 2500, 61k, auto, quad cab, 2wd for 13k
What's your thoughts ? |
seems high for a 2wd, atleast that price would be around here.
for that price I could find 03-04 but with more miles and 4wd |
