Code Information

Does any one know what 1693 means. I looked in the list on this site and it does not show up.
Truck pulling a hill w/ loaded trailer acted like it shut down for about 1/2 second. All guages checked out A.O.K. fuel pressure was about 8.5, engine not to hot. This is the second time it has happened but finally gave a code.
Thanks for any help

That particular code is more or less worthless by itself. I've seen it referred to as a "companion code." If it's a P1693, it's a PCM code that indicates a code has been set in the ECM. If that code didn't display for you, the P1693 by itself won't help much. You'll probably have to get it hooked up to a code reader somewhere to see if there's a meaningful ECM code.

Hello Horse Hauler!

Earlier today, I received the P1693 error code along with the following description: "Circuit Fault; Tachometer." This code was taken from the OBDII connector using an "AutoTap Pro" and a laptop PC.

I'm still working on what it means exactly, but I've been told by a very wise poster to look at the CKP (Crank Position Sensor).

QUOTE:
"I would do the CKP test for voltage and continuity, and make sure it is working before going any farther."

The guy I'm quoting is one of the big guns, so I will follow his advice--no question.

Hope this helps you,

p1693 is a dtc that is set in the ECM (cummins controller) telling you there is a code in the PCM (jtec controller).

That dang 1693 codes is the most misquoted code around.

Our trucks are unique in that they have both a
Cummins Engine Control Module (ECM)
and a Dodge Primary Control Module (PCM).
They don't like talk to each other well, so that code was invented.

It is thrown in one module when the other module has a code but doesn't want to share what it is.

Since it is only the Dodge's with the Cummins that have this 2 module system,
most scan tools misread it, as they are programmed for the hundreds of other Chrysler vehicles, and not specifically for our trucks.

If that is the only code that shows up, either the other has fixed itself and gone away, or the method of retrieving the codes isn't talking to one or the other module.

When the truck acted up the check engine light came on. after about 200 miles over the next several days the light has gone off and truck running like a champ. This is the second time in about 5 weeks this has occurred and I assume it will prolly happen again. Guess I need to take to a dealer and see what they dont know. Truck only has 35k miles on it. Tends to be frustrating as this is the third Cummins I have owned and the second to have computer communication problems.

All cleared after 1,000 miles.
