Code 216 Help???

I have a 98.5 24v... I replaced my Injection pump & lift pump about 35000 miles ago and just the other day my Check engine light came on with a code 216 ( Injector/injection Timing Control Circuit Mailfunction) has anyone had this code and found the problem... I cleared it and I when away for about 4 days and just came back last night..... It seems to only come on when I am on a long down hill grade??? I am thinking about changing the Cam Postions sensor and starting their, I don't want to put another 1200$ pump in it.. any Ideas? I have checked the pressure after the filter and it never drops below 12 psi driving around, I am thinking that the Lift pump is ok at this time.

Thanks for any input

Chris

That would be the VP44 telling you that its not healthy.

Joel Richards just went thru the same thing. Maybe he will reply with more info.

Re:Code 216 Help???

Man that sucks.... Do you know if its something that just going to leave me stranded one day, or will the check engine light just keep coming on every now and then? I runs great I got 19.5 mpg on the last tank, and it never missed a beat... I called around and everyone has the VP44 on back order... cummins wants about 1200 for it. It their anyway to just replace the electronic parts on it with out having to replace the hole thing?<br><br><br>Thanks <br>Chris

Re:Code 216 Help???

You can take the pump to a Bosch injection dealer and have it repaired. If you have to buy another one, make sure it is rebuilt in Germany. They seem to be more reliable than the ones rebuilt other places.<br><br>Charlie

Re:Code 216 Help???

Chrisf:<br>I am going through the same thing. My check engine light does not come on but on long down hills with very light throttle then go to push on the go pedal nothing happens. I either have to let up completely on the pedal and then try again or mash it to the floor and get it to kickdown a gear. When it does this it smokes blue/grey smoke like nobodies business and occassionally backfires (it happened in the eisenhower tunnel here at 10000 feet and about 2 feet of flame came roaring out the tailpipe and I gaurantee everyone in the tunnel had a load in their pants sounded like an artillery round. Fogs out cars to the rear. Only does it sometimes under the downhill conditions, otherwise truck runs/starts fine. Same as you it sets code 0216 inj pump timing failure. I went to dealer yesterday to make appointment and he said whenever it smokes blue/grey smoke like that it is almost always the injection pump going south. Took it back in this morning for them to diagnose will let you know what I find out.

It runs good even going down hill, the light just comes on ???(but only some of the time) but it is when I just give it a little gas and lock up the converter but not accelerate. Let me know what you find....

Re:Code 216 Help???

I got a better guage to check my lift pump ( the old one had been droped a couple of times : )... and found that it stays around 12 psi at Idle, 10 psi at 60 mph or so, and drops sometimes to 7 psi with wot :-[ So what I am geting at is, I have a bad lift pump... Now my question is with geting code 216 4 times in a month dose that meen that Its just a bad lift pump or have a Already destroyed my VP44

Re:Code 216 Help???

I got the 0216 code once after a quick down hill too. I had my pressure gauge hooked up to the filter housing, because I got a rattle in it when it wwas hooked to the injector pump. I had good pressure. I moved the sender to the injector pump and I still had good pressure. Then I made a hard blast to get on the freeway. Zero fuel pressure!!!! and it took a long time to come back. I had a plugged filter. I had only 2000 miles on the filter. I changed the filter and no more problems. It has been 18,000 miles.<br>the VP44 uses internal fuel pressure to advance the timing, hence low fuel flow there is not enough extra fuel to do it.

Re:Code 216 Help???

P0216 = bad. Buddy of mine going through that right now. But he also has driveability issues. Low power at times, funny coloured smoke and everything. He has changed several parts, the sensors even including the fuel relay. Nothing has helped. That is why is going to Piers for a new pump shortly.

Re:Code 216 Help???

I had pretty much of all of the above and the misfortune of being out of warranty when I finallly took it Schied Diesel. I had to wait awhile to get the Bosch pump,my choice. It made a lot of difference in the truck includig about 1.5 mpg towing and empty for me.<br>They also gave me a DTR discount. Real happy with the motor now.

Re:Code 216 Help???

Well took it to the dealer last friday. The service writer says the pump is bad, the mechanic says the pump is bad, the codes point to the pump being bad but DC would not authorize the repair until it did it again since they could not duplicate the problem. (I guess it is hard to simulate downhill on the shop floor, wouldn't want to drive or anything). Anyway the SW told me that if it did it again they would replace it. 45 minutes later going down the west side of Eisenhower tunnel towards Dillion it did it again and on every long downhill since then. Got back to town last night after a not so sure I was going to get home drive as it seemed to get worse and worse on the way home. Called the Service Writer this am he said bring it in tommorrow, they will capture the codes, get auth from DC and order the pump. Then I can bring it back again to get the pump r&amp;r'd.
