Re:Changing Tranny Fluid

I did my '99 almost a year ago. Loosened the valve body bolts about 3 turns, and let drain overnight. Got about 11.5 qt out. You'll only get 6-7 w/o doing so. Re-torqued to (I think 13 #/ft, will check my manual), change filter, replace pan, start in neutral. Good to go. Measure qty of drained fluid, and you'll have a good starting point for refill.

If you are having any shifting problems, I'm usually not big on additives, but I've seen Trans-X (available almost anywhere) do some amazing things with Mopar Transmissions. I've used it and it really seems to help smooth out shifting and it may impress you if you are having minimal shifting shortcomings. It should be run for a while (20-30k) then replace with the ATF+3. I've even used it in 3-speed hydraulic shift transmission on a tractor and was astonished at the recovery of the middle gear (its all about the clutches and seals ;D).

I've heard of guys removing the line to the cooler, start the engine, and letting the pump drain the torque converter. Anyone familiar with doing this?

Re:Changing Tranny Fluid

Commatoze, I've done that before but never on a RAM. I've also done the same thing flushing power steering fluid too.

I think both methods (flushing and/or draining) have their advantages, but believe that flushing better removes the chunkies that may be found in the cooler & lines before they made it into the filter that draining won't eliminate.

Draining can be done w/o help, but I've found it helps to have someone else around when flushing.
