CamShaft Position Sensor
Hello board;
I could use some help with this one. My MIL light has been coming on/off for the past couple of weeks. I had the codes pulled late last week, and the results were a P0341 Cmp Sig Error. The past day or two I have noticed my tack has begun to intermittantly fail, mostly at idle.......and today the truck did an abrubt over rev while idling. Almost as though I had stomped it to the floor and let up real quick like. I stopped at my ***********, and they told me $75 and a week later they could have me a new CMP sensor. I'm pretty hard up these days, and dont want to be throwing money into this that I dont need too. Is there any fix / cleaning to these CMP sensors, or should I just shell out the cash for a new one? Are they difficult to get at / change out on my own? Can I buy a new one someplace other than the dealership? Wondering if anybody else has been through this. Thanks a bunch for any insight. |
Ok-- I think I located the little bugger.....just underneath the injector pump. I have moderate sized hands, and could just barely get at it. Looks like it would be a lot easier to replace with the injector pump pulled. (Which was just replaced about 2 months ago! :-( )
Does anybody know, can this be accomplished without removing the IP ? |
Yes, it can be done without pulling the pump, but as you found it is pretty tight in there.

I'm still laughing..... Where are you guys buying your new CMP sensors? Dealer the only place to get em? I am kind of worried about the install. Any tips to help make the process go a little easier? Just tonight, when I was fishing around for it.....I tried to unhook the wire harness, just to check for corrosion. I couldnt even seem to get that done. Everything has to be done one handed? No way I could get both my hands in there. Once the wire harness plug is disconnected.......how does the sensor come out? Loosen a nut around the plug itself ? I hate to have to pay someone to replace this, would just as soon do it myself. Thanks |
Call Cummins they have the part you need normally at a much lower price. the will need the serial number on you engine (look at the tag on the side of the timing cover for it). If you don't have one local Cummins dealer call any Cummins dealer in the country and have it drop shipped, its normally only $10 for overnight delivery!

I'll check with cummins........the last time I didnt have very good luck. Month or so ago I was shopping for an IP, and my nearest cummins dealer quoted me $1200 over what my local diesel shop did the job for. I'll check just the same.

Not fun to change, you may come up with new cuss words while changing that sensor, mine at dodge was 130.00 or so.

Located under ip ,move the pipe out of the way from the intercooler to the intake horn gives you a little more room. Two allen head screws hold the sensor in. Its alittle tight ,take your time and have patients. |

My local diesel specialty shop can get me the sensor for $60. Dodge wanted about $75. Should be in tomorrow or friday. Do you happen to know what size allen heads I should be using, I cant see what I'm up against at all....and have kind of big hands. Looks like it will have to be done one handed. My diesel shop thought that it would just turn out / unscrew? |
One allen headed bolt to remove, possible 5mm (?)...it's been awile. I use a allen 1/4 socket attached to a "wobble" extension connected to another extension and a stubby ratchet to get er done. I also coat the end of the allen socket with door ease so the bolt won't fall off when removing. I usually tape it to the socket with a little masking tape on the install. I do know my hand ends up contorted in front of and below the fuel filter housing when wrenching it out. Where in SoDak are you?

Once you get the old one out the rest is gravy. I've lived in Pierre, Watertown and Aberdeen before ending up in AZ. Too **** cold in the east part!! I could deal with RC's weather.

LOL. Yeah, I wont argue, it gets pretty cold. I'm born and raised in this part of the world,.....so just dont know any better. Also a pretty passionate ice fisherman,....cant see myself living anyplace other than SD. ;-)

Born and raised in central S.D. .....but S.D. is no where for a mechanic and educator to be living. We moved to AZ "for a couple of years" to get my wife teaching experience (been 8yrs now). We basically can't afford to move back. Not willing to take the $$$ hit. I enjoyed living in H2O town. Hot rod in every garage!! Good buddy of mine is the service manager at the DC dealer there.
