BLEW the turbo!

Well today I ended up blowing my turbo. The intake side let loose and the compressor wheel is in 2 pieces with lots of blades midding and chewed up. It let go at about 20 PSI. The truck turned off right away and I coasted to a stop. I then had it towed home... My question is. What are the chances of my engine being junk now?? Is there any way to tell how much carnage got past the intercooler?? I have the blown charger off already.. Any advice?? Thanks...

PS.. I never heard a turbo let go before today... Pretty wicked sound/experience...

You can pull the intake manifold/plate and get a glance down in the head to see if there is any visible shards. Beyond that, its pulling the head pretty much.

OK, Thanks for the help. Here is the million dollar question....

How many guys have a wrecked engine due to a blown turbo???

What would you guys do?

Replace the intercooler, clean out the tubes and drive on with a new lung...

Or would it be better to pull the head and check it out...

Does this mean that the truck died and you did not shut it off? If so I would say that something made it stop. If so I would say you need to pull the head. If you shut down the truck then you are probably ok with just cleaning everything all the way to the head.

I agree, but just to be safe I would pull the head and double check everything while you are in there. I would err on the safe side if it was me.

Pull the aftercooler clean it out and you will be fine. We see this all the time at work and have yet have one get stuff in the engine. We have had them come in off the road running and still no parts in the engine.

i've blown 3 turbo's theyook the motor out but i did not shut them off as fast as you did so the oil going thru is what scored the cylinders not parts. clean the intercooler and all the intake lines and fire it up if you killed it you will know right away as soon as it runs. it wont make it any worse

If you turned the key off that quick then I would not worry about it. Just clean the line and the cooler. you should be fine.

Just an update... Got the truck tore apart now. Cooler is out ran some degreaser through it and flushed it with the garden hose for quite a while.. Got a lot of very fine "particles" of the compressor wheel, along with a few chunks about as big as my fingernail...

I took the ATS intake horn off and checked it out, no oil residue nor did I see any pieces of the blown turbo...

Im just trying to figure out which charger Im going to go with....

Glad the engine is alright.

Since this is no longer an emergency problem, I'm moving it into the 24V forum.
