biodiesel and 24 valves
Is anyone running 100% biodiesel in there 24v cummins? If you are, did you have any problems with the large filler hose to the fuel tank, the fuel line form the tank to the lift pump, and the gasket in the fuel filter. From what I understand, the alchohol in biodiesel attacks rubber in fuel system and causes it to beak down over time. Are these components in our trucks made from a material that is alchohol resistant? Any other problems with using biodiesel in 24valves? If these components are NOT made from rubber then they are safe with biodiesel. I have a '01 24v. Thanks.
If your using more than 20% or using 20% for long you need to change any rubber that comes in contact with fuel to vinton[ I forgot how they spell that word but its close]hoses & seals, there is a alchohol used in prosesing bio diesel but if its done write I don't think there is any left after, in my reading its the vegie oil that attacts the rubber.
This hasn't been a problem since 1993. Newer vehicles are set up for low sulfur diesel, which has the same solvency issues as B100. This is assuming you are talking about refinery produced BD, not waste vegie oil or backyard BD, with them anything goes due to the variability.
B100 will clean your tank and fuel system out with it's solvent effect, be prepared to change the filter after the first or second tank and carry a spare.
Don't think you'll like B100 anyway, less mpgs and noticeable power drop. B20 is much more desirable.

I'm sure I wouldn't like the loss of mpg's or power either but if I can make the fuel myself for 1/4 the cost of pump diesel, I'm sure I could get used to it! I just want to double check that I won't have any compatability isues. Thanks.
I'm running bio- I found that it's very important to have a FP gauge! One issue is that bio has a higher viscosity and therefore fuel pressure becomes an issue when it's cold. After the tank has warmed up it will work fine. I'm using a holley blue by the tank and I can't comment if the stock LP will be able to keep up with bio.

I run B20 on a regular basis and I'm happy with the performance and the mileage is the same as straight diesel for me.
Once I ran B50 by filling 1/2 up with B100 and 1/2 with straight diesel. Didn't notice any adverse effects to performance or the fuel lines and the mileage was probably a little less. Exhaust smelled alot more french fry like.
Like previously mentioned, alchohol sould not be present in commecially produced BD and though I notice only a little more crud when changing my fuel filter it's a good idea to keep a spare filter.
My recomendation: Try B20 and see what you think.

Does anyone here make their own Bio? I'm looking for a good reciept. There is a lot on the web, but they differ some. I have two big plastic tanks that would work perfect. I just need to find a simple to follow reciept and a couple more items to complete my processor. Any help would be great.
Go to www.veggieavanger.com. It has TONS of info to get you going on recepies and plans for making processors, plus chat. Check it out!
I've been reasearching bio also. I check DTR then off to research bio. Still haven't come up with a recipe I'll follow, I'm gonna start making a list of equipment I need, but still dunno how to use it all either.
Biodiesel is so expensive, it's tough to run here unless you are making it yourself ($3.30 a gallon). Also the only station that has it closes at 4PM.
Willie Nelson has a truck stop at the I35 split (W/E) north of Waco that sells B20 at the pumps for a reasonable price!
Anyway, I would say if you've been running dino diesel for a long time, throwing some biodiesel into this mix is going to loosen up a bunch of crud in your tank, fuel lines, etc. Mine left tiny chunks of who knows what in my fuel filter housing that I had to actually VACUUM out because they were too big to go through the fuel filter housing drain.
After that intial annoyance it was all fine. I've pretty much stopped running itbecause it's so inconvenient to find unfortunately.
