Another VP removal question.

I put a new VP on my truck just before christmas. Everything went pretty much fine. I was talking to my boss about it today who is unfamiliar with that particular part of a cummins but extremely knowledgeable with, well, everything else mechanical it seems like. Anyways he asked me how did I keep the gear that the pump goes into from moving out of place while I had the pump out. My answer was "pause......UH OH!!!!!. Could this have happened? and if iti did would I be able to notice it. I remember I had to crank the heck out of that puller to break the shaft loose and I remember it broke loose somewhat violently. im afraid I may have just moved it one tooth off and its silently destroying my brand new VP or worse. Im hoping that this mistake can not be made and im just worrying too much. I talked to a lot of people who had done the VP two step before and they didnt mention anything about the gear becoming mis aligned. Thanks a bunch for all the help guys.

You better sit down and have a drink, you're stressing yourself out.

The gear is on a tapered shaft. Its not a very steep taper, so even though that the gear jumps off pretty hard, there isn't enough room for it to jump a tooth. The only way you are gonna jump a tooth if you lift the gear up with your finger after you have pulled the pump out and turn it. And if that happened, your truck would run really poor, if it at all.

Sometimes it is better not to listen to "knowledgble" people.

Your knowledgable friend was being prudent, cause many diesels this would have been a big problem. Not so with the VP44 of course.

In spite of all the triple checking and care I put into anything I do on my CTD.... I worry about all my own work!
Leave it at a friends shop for one of his clock watching guys to work on.... I'm tend to believe it's perfect!
Took me a few years to start believing I can do it as well...or better!

Look at it like this, you have to have the correct KEY in the keyway for the pump to operate, they use different keys to time the pump.

If it had jumped a whole tooth, bad things would have happened rigtht away.
