before blaming TC, inspect frt drv shaft u-joints and double cardan joint, dont forget to inspect front u-joints...almost always 4x4 noise vibration is a failed joint in the driveline

Have you checked the front joints as well? I've changed lots of them on 3rd gens, you'd think with the front end turning all the time the noise/vib would show in 2wd, but it only rears its head in 4wd, I've also seen them pile up so that they appear tight, when infact they are not, usually you will see rust colored dust near one or 2 of the u-joint caps..
and speaking of needing to replace u-joints I gotta replace another pass side joint 3rd one in 3yrs, it has play and rust near one cap, drv side has 473,000kms on it and its orginal (non greaseable) all the pass side joints were greasable precision joints...go fiqure

Were you driving on a relative good traction surface?
Sort of gatered you were. If the rolling diameter of tires are not the same it will bind up the driveline and make similiar noise.
Even if tires the same the drive line will bind up from going around curves. Rear wheel path is less than front in curve.
Only drive in lock when tires can easilly slip as on ice or off pavement.
And then you could have a streched chain from previous above mentioned events.

not sure about these TC but most when the chain is worn that bad, if you load it up in gear with the brakes on it will skip/grind.

or maybe front diff is going and thats causing a binding/buck
