#53 Block news

I got word from a buddy who is a diesel mechanic. He says if you have a #53 block and take it back to the dealer they'll reflash your computer so it warms up quicker that way the block wont crack

Can you explain this further?

Only reflash I know of for warming up faster is the high idle and 3 cylinder idle, and thats available to all VP trucks.

Im not sure. He just Said if you take it back to the dealer they will flash your computer to adjust engine management and its suppose to keep the block from cracking.

I asked locknstitch about getting there 53 block brace and he said most of the blocks are fine. pull a freeze plug measure below the plug if it is above 1/4 inch your good to go is what i was told. i never did measure it im way to lazy but check with them on how to measure the block.

A buddy of mine has a 53 block and it runs really cool like it has a 160 thermostat or something. Would this help in not cracking or hurt?

I have a 53 block and mine has always ran cool. It has never ran up to the normal 190 even climbing hills hard on the throttle. I would think a simple thermostat change would help (if they make a hotter one), but I haven't looked into it yet.

Are you going by the dash gauge, or another gauge for water temp? My 98 12v looks like it runs cool all the time by the dash gauge, its always at the lowest 'normal' line. It has an aftermarket water temp gauge in it, and it will be up between 170-190 and fluctuate back and forth at full temp. My sister has an early 98 half ton with the 318, and the gauge is the same thing.

It would be an extremely rare dealer who would reflash a truck for free, regardless of what block casting you might have.

A better bet would be to find someone with a Smarty who would be willing to flash your truck.
